Questioning is a powerful alternative to making statements.

A good question is often much better than a defensive remark, or a counter-accusation, for all sorts of situations. Using an open question (What. How. especially) is a simple and effective technique for resisting forceful or bullying pressure. Using questions, rather than statements and guesses, is also very effective for building trust, diffusing conflict, understanding situations, managing other people, teaching, training, and parenting. Traditionally, questioning is regarded as mainly a selling skill, but it’s powerful and productive in virtually every circumstance involving human cooperation.

Anyone can be a leader – inspiring others, helping others, making a positive difference to someone or something. Leadership is most effective and easiest when it is adaptable. Explore different theories of leadership – they each offer adaptable methods, styles, etc.

What’s the most powerful rule of negotiating.

Have an alternative.

Be able to walk away.

This simple principle is often ignored, particularly because as buyers or sellers we all tend to focus and fixate on a single option, which quickly creates a dependence on it, which produces pressure (including time/deadline) to agree a deal, which weakens our position, and strengthens the position of the other side.

Nudge theory helps us understand why we fixate on a single option, and why the apparent desirability of a single option increases.

The Psychological Contract are additionally very useful models and tools in planning and assisting others through change.

Pareto’s 80-20 Theory is very useful for problem-solving, decision-making, downsizing, optimization, streamlining, and all sorts of evaluation and change, in business, organizations, and personal life too.

  • Understanding yourself, and how your priorities change through life.
  • Understanding this in others.
  • Teaching and exploring this with others.
  • Understanding how to motivate and relate to people of different ages.

Acronyms are brilliant and entertaining devices which offer all sorts of opportunities to add interest and amusement – and crucially impact and memorability – to training. writing and presentations .

And the acronym is just one of scores of fascinating language curiosities and effects. which help bring spoken and written words to life.

Businessballs offers other useful glossaries too:

For example see the business dictionary and the glossary of common Latin terms – again these are super resources and inspiration for training and communicating in most situations.

Recent national elections have shown how divided the nation has become, with political fault lines separating communities and even families. Scholars have observed a deepening of this divide as individuals turn to news outlets that tend to confirm already held beliefs. But a University of Missouri legal expert argues that a way forward exists, and it starts with the application of principles used in dispute resolution.

Findings provide support for increased body-image awareness to improve overall health

How teenagers perceive their appearance, including their body image, can have significant impacts on health and wellness. Prior body image research has shown that people with negative body image are more likely to develop eating disorders and are more likely to suffer from depression and low self-esteem. Now, Virginia Ramseyer Winter, a body image expert and an assistant professor in the University of Missouri’s School of Social Work, found negative body image also is associated with increased tobacco and alcohol use, with implications for both young men and women. Notably, she also found relationships between substance use and perceived attractiveness, with girls who believe they are very good looking being more likely to drink. Full Story

Yard Drainage

If you have perpetual puddles in certain areas of your yard, it can be bothersome, unattractive, and unhealthy for your lawn.

Keith estimated the job and did it for the price he estimated. His folks were timely, extremely neat (despite having to tear up concrete and pour concrete in a basement that could only be accessed from inside), and worked efficiently. We were very pleased. When I had a few questions after the job was completed, Keith was very responsive to those as well.

– Mark R.

We needed mold remediation services after having an issue with our gutters that caused water to sit in the crawl space. Shamrock Waterproofing cleaned the beams with an antimicrobial cleaner and installed a new 6 MIL vapor barrier on about 1500 sq. feet of space. They did a great job, and I would use them again. Their estimate was significantly less than the competition. They were very responsive to my questions and helpful in determining the right solution for my home. The work took less than 1 day.

– Janice M.

My crawlspace had 6-8 inches of standing water. Keith came out immediately and diagnosed the problem. Within 24 hours he provided an estimate. The work was scheduled for February the 8th, and I was pleased to see his crew showed up on time. All work was completed the same day and the workers cleaned up after themselves. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Shamrock if someone needs a referral.

– Torin G.

Initial quote was close to final invoice. Had others come to look at the problem and didn’t even return our call. Shamrock right away understood what needed to be done and offered a solution. They were recommended by others in similar business areas. They had to dig up our recently planted landscape at front of our house, so I was nervous, but they did a super job of taking care of the new plantings, putting them all back just where they were supposed to be. Everything seems to be fine now, a month later, and growing healthy. They had to dig down along our basement wall to re-do waterproofing that was allowing moisture into our basement area. Did a great job, did it quickly, and cleaned up after themselves. They were prompt, worked fast, and got it all done to our satisfaction. We would recommend them to anybody.

– Marchelle F.

Installed new exterior drain piping from rear downspouts to divert water around foundation so that it would flow to the front culvert. Sealed crawlspace and remediated fungus on floor joists in crawlspace. Quick response time, work performed quickly, full clean up and follow-up. Mr. Locker was incredibly professional and spent a lot of time helping us understand what did and did not need to be done and advising us of our options.

– Beth V.

It all went very well, and they provided excellent service. Their customer service is excellent and very helpful. This company stands behind their guarantees. The owner came back out to the house a week later to do additional work to get the job done right.

– Christine W.

Mental Health: Adjustment Disorder #adjustment #disorder, #situational #depression, #stress, #anxiety, #change, #event, #job, #loss, #family,

Mental Health and Adjustment Disorder

Adjustment disorder is a short-term condition that occurs when a person has great difficulty coping with, or adjusting to, a particular source of stress, such as a major life change, loss, or event. In 2013, the mental health diagnostic system technically changed the name of “adjustment disorder” to “stress response syndrome.”

Because people with an adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome often have some of the symptoms of clinical depression. such as tearfulness, feelings of hopelessness, and loss of interest in work or activities, adjustment disorder is sometimes informally called “situational depression .” Unlike major depression. however, an adjustment disorder doesn’t involve as many of the physical and emotional symptoms of clinical depression (such as changes in sleep. appetite and energy) or high levels of severity (such as suicidal thinking or behavior).

The type of stress that can trigger an adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome varies depending on the person, but can include:

  • Ending of a relationship or marriage
  • Losing or changing job
  • Death of a loved one
  • Developing a serious illness (yourself or a loved one)
  • Being a victim of a crime
  • Having an accident
  • Undergoing a major life change (such as getting married, having a baby. or retiring from a job)
  • Living through a disaster, such as a fire, flood, or hurricane

A person with an adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome develops emotional and/or behavioral symptoms as a reaction to a stressful event. These symptoms generally begin within three months of the event and rarely last for longer than six months after the event or situation. In an adjustment disorder, the reaction to the stressor is greater than what is typical or expected for the situation or event. In addition, the symptoms may cause problems with a person’s ability to function; for example, the person may be have trouble with sleep. work, or studying.

An adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome is not the same as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD ). PTSD generally occurs as a reaction to a life-threatening event and tends to last longer. Adjustment disorders/stress response syndromes, on the other hand, are short-term, rarely lasting longer than six months.

What Are the Symptoms of an Adjustment Disorder/Stress Response Syndrome?

An adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome can have a wide variety of symptoms that are changes from someone’s usual self, which may include:

  • Feeling of hopelessness
  • Sadness
  • Frequent crying
  • Anxiety (nervousness)
  • Worry
  • Headaches or stomachaches
  • Palpitations (an unpleasant sensation of irregular or forceful beating of the heart )
  • Withdrawal or isolation from people and social activities
  • A new pattern of absence from work or school
  • New and uncharacteristic dangerous or destructive behavior, such as fighting, reckless driving, and vandalism
  • Changes in appetite, either loss of appetite, or overeating
  • Problems sleeping
  • Feeling tired or without energy
  • Increase in the use of alcohol or other drugs

Symptoms in children and teens tend to be more behavioral in nature, such as skipping school, fighting, or acting out. Adults, on the other hand, tend to experience more emotional symptoms, such as sadness and anxiety .

How Common Is an Adjustment Disorder/Stress Response Syndrome?

Adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome is very common and can affect anyone, regardless of gender, age, race, or lifestyle. Although an adjustment disorder can occur at any age, it is more common at times in life when major transitions occur, such as adolescence, mid-life, and late-life.

How Do I Find Out if I Have an Adjustment Disorder/Stress Response Syndrome?

If you suspect you may have an adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome, see your doctor. If symptoms are present, your doctor may perform a physical exam and ask questions about your medical history. Although there are no imaging or lab tests to specifically diagnose an adjustment disorder, the doctor may sometimes use laboratory tests — such as blood tests or imaging studies like CT or MRI scans — to rule out physical illness or other medical causes of changes in mood or behavior (such as head trauma ) as the cause of your symptoms. Your doctor will also look for other mental illnesses, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, major depression. or an anxiety disorder.

Your doctor bases his or her diagnosis of adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome on your report of the intensity and duration of symptoms — including any problems with daily functioning caused by the symptoms. In general, an adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome is suspected if the level of distress is more intense than would normally be expected, given the stressor, or if the symptoms interfere with normal functioning.

If adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome is suspected, your doctor will likely refer you to a psychiatrist, psychologist. or other mental health professional who are trained to help people when they have trouble coping with and managing stressful life events.

How Is an Adjustment Disorder/Stress Reponse SyndromeTreated?

Psychotherapy (a type of counseling) is the most common treatment for adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome. Therapy helps the person understand how the stressor has affected his or her life. It also helps the person develop better coping skills. Support groups can also be helpful by allowing the person to discuss his or her concerns and feelings with people who are coping with the same stress. In some cases, medication may be used to help control anxiety symptoms or sleeping problems.

If you have symptoms of adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome, it is very important that you seek medical care. Major depression also could potentially develop in people who are vulnerable to mood disorders. Plus, you may develop a substance abuse problem if you turn to alcohol or drugs to help you cope with stress and anxiety.

Most people with adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome recover completely. In fact, a person who is treated for adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome may learn new skills that actually allow him or her to function better than before the symptoms began.

Can an Adjustment Disorder/Stress Response Syndrome Be Prevented?

There is no known way to prevent adjustment disorder/stress response syndrome. However, strong family and social support can help a person work through a particularly stressful situation or event. The best prevention is early treatment, which can reduce the severity and duration of symptoms, and teach new coping skills.

    Part Time Jobs

    Part Time Employment Information

    Part-Time Job Overview

About 20 percent of working Americans have a part-time job where they work less than 35 hours a week. Whether you work part time or full time is often influenced by age and gender. About 78 percent of 16- to 19-year-olds and 29 percent of people 55 and older work a part-time job, whereas only 20 percent of workers 25 to 54 are part-time employees, according to government data. In addition, more women (33 percent) than men (20 percent) hold part-time employment.

    Part-Time Job Market

Industries where a lot of workers have part-time jobs include:

    • Leisure and hospitality: 45 percent
    • Sales: 32 percent
    • Retail and wholesale: 31 percent
    • Office and administrative: 28 percent
    • Education and health services: 28 percent

With the exception of education and healthcare jobs, which almost always require at least some college coursework, most part-time jobs require only a high school diploma.

The recession increased the number of people who wanted to work full time but could find only part-time work. That was especially true for teens and young adults, less-educated workers, African American and Hispanic men, blue-collar workers, and people 65 and older, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) says.

    Part-Time Salaries

The median part-time salary was $226 per week in the second quarter of 2012, according to the BLS. There are some careers where at least 20 percent of the workers are part time and earn $30 or more per hour (in 2006 dollars): dentists, pharmacists, art directors, physical therapists, chiropractors and dental hygienists.

The Best Financial Firms to Work For – Investment Banking Jobs – Trades – Tombstones

The Best Financial Firms to Work For

Fortune magazine has published its annual list of the top 100 companies to work for in America, and a whopping 20 financial services firms made the grade.

Among the top three were Edward Jones, once again ranked #2. The St. Louis-based investment advisor sailed through the recession without having to close any of its 12,615 offices. And it s even looking to hire more staff (see below).

Robert W. Baird Co. came in at number 11; Johnson Financial Group, based in Wisconsin, was the third-ranked financial firm at number 22 on the list. As for investment banking jobs. Goldman Sachs was fifth among financial companies and 24th overall.

The public may view Goldman as the poster boy for corporate excess, but employees are certainly happy with a big increase in bonuses this year. LPN Jobs

    LPN Job Overview

LPNs, or Licensed Practical Nurse are responsible for a variety of tasks underneath the direction of registered nurses and physicians. They are primarily in charge of caring for sick patients and work in environments such as hospitals, nursing homes, hospice facilities, doctors’ offices and private homes. Depending on where LPNs work, their job description varies.

Daily Tasks of Licensed Practical Nurses include:

    • Recording patient history
    • Take vital signs
    • Giving medication and immunizations
    • Supervising Certified Nursing Assistants
    • Assessing patient reaction to medication
    • Interacting with family members to understand legal and medical matters

Many LPNs that excel in their work often choose to attend extended education to become Registered Nurses .

    LPN Job Education Requirements

Candidates who wish to become LPNs must have a high school diploma or GED. This enables potential LPNs to apply for certification, which is usually a 2 or 3 semester program. Vocation schools or community colleges offer these programs either in person or online. The most reputable programs are certified by the National League for Nursing Accredited Commission. These same schools also offer additional certifications on top of the general LPN, including an IV specialty course and an Immunization specialty course. In all 50 states and Canadian provinces, LPNs must be licensed by state or provincial government and be able to pass a background check.

LPNs looking to seek higher roles typically acquire an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree to eventually become a Register Nurse. Management roles, such as Nurse Manager. require master’s or doctoral degrees.

    LPN Job Market

Employment for LPNs is projected to grow over 25 percent in the next ten years, which is over double any other non-healthcare related job sector. The increase in elderly patients, preventative healthcare, and diseases such as diabetes and obesity also factor in to the high demand. While LPNs are licensed in general nursing practices, specializations are beneficial and highly sought by employers.

    • Physiology
    • Pharmacology
    • Microbiology
    • Psychology
    • Nutrition
    • Geriatrics

The most highly sought after is the geriatric branch, which provides a higher starting salary than the others.

    LPN Job Salary Information

Starting median salaries for LPNs are usually around $43,087 a year. The amount of money increases with specialization, demand, and experience. If LPNs obtain a bachelor’s degree to become a registered nurse, the salary balloons to $63,000 a year. Because most LPN programs are the same, the salary wavers very little from the median value.
