Apple US Plant Locations: Foxconn Will Reportedly Build Factory In Wisconsin

As a company, Apple is best known for products like the iPhone and MacBook lineup, but could it bring manufacturing jobs for these products back from China? Long-time Apple supplier Foxconn is expected to announce plans Wednesday to build a factory in Wisconsin, CNBC reports.

According to CNBC, the plant could potentially be located around southeast Wisconsin and it could potentially focus on building display panels for devices like home televisions. The move is also a significant update on Foxconn’s previous plans to move into the U.S. Chinese parts giant Foxconn said earlier this month it wants to make a $10 billion investment within the U.S. and was looking into launching a factory in the Midwest.

“Our investment in the U.S. will focus on these states because they are the heart of the country’s manufacturing sector,” Foxconn chairman Terry Gou said. “We are bringing the entire industrial chain back to the traditional manufacturing region of the U.S.”

However, Apple’s exact involvement in the factory — if any — remains unclear. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal Tuesday, President Donald Trump said Apple CEO Tim Cook had promised to build three production plants in the U.S.

“I spoke to [Tim Cook], he’s promised me three big plants — big, big, big,” Trump said, according to the Journal. “I said you know, Tim, unless you start building your plants in this country, I won’t consider my administration an economic success. He called me, and he said they are going forward.”

For Apple’s part, the company declined to comment on Trump’s statement.

In the past, Apple had traditionally been hesitant to bring much of its China-based manufacturing back to the U.S. During a 2015 interview with 60 Minutes, Cook pinned much of the blame for why Apple moved its manufacturing overseas to a lack of skilled American workers.

“You can take every tool and die maker in the United States and probably put them in a room that we’re currently sitting in,” Cook said. “In China, you would have to have multiple football fields.”

But recently, Apple has been more willing to look into significant U.S. investment. Earlier this year, Apple announced plans to launch a $1 billion fund that will invest in developing advanced U.S.-based manufacturing jobs. In 2013, Apple also launched a small factory in Austin, Texas that focused on building its high-end Mac Pro desktops.

Among its Chinese partners, Apple also reportedly asked them to consider moving some manufacturing to the U.S. earlier this year. While responses have been mixed among Apple’s various Chinese contractors, who help produce components like screens and chips within Apple devices, Foxconn has been a high-profile supporter for the move.

On paper, the moves could come with some clear hurdles for Apple. If the company moved production of the iPhone to the U.S., analysts have predicted that it could cause the manufacturing costs of the smartphone to potentially double.

But for Apple, some of the reasoning behind these moves is likely political. During the U.S. presidential election last year, Trump made investments in U.S. manufacturing a frequent talking point while on the campaign trail. Especially with topics like outsourcing, companies like Apple were occasional targets for Trump. Previously, Trump has threatened to place hefty trade tariffs on Chinese-made goods. During a talk in January at Liberty University, Trump also called for Apple to move some jobs back to the U.S.

“We’re gonna get Apple to start building their damn computers and things in this country, instead of in other countries.” Trump said.

Historically, Trump generally hasn’t been modest about championing major job investments from U.S. companies. On Twitter and in public appearances, President Trump has frequently credited his administration as being a driving factor in companies bringing jobs back to the U.S., although these instances often come with major qualifiers.

In cases like Charter Communications, Trump’s announcements have been for investments from companies who had previously announced them during President Obama’s presidency. For others, factories like Carrier, where Trump had made past appearances tied to job creation plans, announced major layoffs for employees.

(Columbia, S.C.) – Today, Attorney General Alan Wilson alerted the public to an online promotion that misleads consumers to believe they can receive tobacco settlement money. The online promotion claims individuals can sign up to claim thousands of dollars per month from the tobacco Master Settlement Agreement. The advertisement promises that individuals may receive a tax-free portion of the tobacco Master Settlement Agreement and that this money is guaranteed by the government. (COLUMBIA, S.C.) – Attorney General Alan Wilson announced today that South Carolina has joined a federal antitrust lawsuit alleging that six generic drug-makers entered into illegal conspiracies in order to unreasonably restrain trade, artificially inflate and manipulate prices and reduce competition in the United States for two generic drugs. An amended complaint filed with the federal court increases the number of plaintiff states in the lawsuit from 20 to 40, which was initially filed in December 2016. The amended complaint also adds claims of alleged violations of state antitrust laws – in addition to the alleged violations of federal antitrust

The death of a U.S. Navy SEAL in Somalia this week highlights the little-known mission that U.S. military advisers have been carrying out in that country: to advise the Somali military in its fight against the al Qaeda affiliate, al-Shabaab.

Since 2013 a small number of American troops have worked with military forces from the new Somali government to fight al-Shabaab, the extremist group that once ruled Somalia.

As part of their advise and assist mission, American special operations forces accompany Somali troops in raids against al-Shabaab. But they are not directly engaged in combat unless they find themselves in a self-defense situation.

Here is a closer look at the role American troops are playing in Somalia.

What Are U.S. Troops Doing in Somalia?

According to the Pentagon, there are about 50 American military personnel in Somalia, most of them special operations forces based in the capital city of Mogadishu. An equal number of conventional forces are currently in Somalia for a training mission lasting several months.

They are there to carry out an advise and assist mission with Somali government forces fighting al-Shabaab.

American military forces also work closely with African Union peacekeeping troops in Somalia. These troops support the Somali government in its fight against al-Shabaab.

The American forces help plan Somali military raids against al-Shabaab and then assist those forces when they carry out the raid.

They also provide the helicopters that transport the Somali troops to their targets. While they accompany the Somali troops on raids, American forces do not actively participate in the operation.

There have been several instances over the past year where some of these American forces have engaged in firefights in self-defense. Sometimes drone airstrikes have been called in to provide additional support.

In March, the Trump administration granted new authorities to U.S. Africa Command that allow the U.S. military to conduct unilateral offensive counterterrorism airstrikes against al-Shabaab if needed. Until then, the U.S. military had only been able to conduct airstrikes against al-Shabaab fighters in self-defense situations when African Union or Somali government troops accompanied by American advisers were under attack.

Friday’s raid was not carried out under those new authorities, but was part of the ongoing advise and assist mission.

First U.S. Combat Death in Somalia Since 1993

The death of the Navy SEAL was the first U.S. military fatality in Somalia since the deadly “Black Hawk Down” incident in 1993 that killed 18 American service members. “Black Hawk Down” has become synonymous with the U.S. military intervention in Somalia. It was the title of a book and movie that recounted the deadly battle and rescue mission that resulted in the takedown of two American Black Hawk helicopters in Mogadishu by Somali militia fighters.

In late 1992, President George H. W. Bush ordered American troops into Somalia to enable the delivery of humanitarian aid intended to relieve a famine.

But that peaceful mission soon became tense as a United Nations peacekeeping force found itself in combat with forces loyal to Somali warlord Mohammed Aidid.

‘Jeopardy!’: A Brief History

Updated March 04, 2017

Jeopardy! has been around in its current format since 1984, with the same host and the same familiar style of game play. But its history goes back to the 1960s — it premiered in 1964 and was created by the game show king of that era, Merv Griffin.

Jeopardy is consistently one of the highest-rated shows in syndication across the country. Airing every weeknight on local affiliate networks, the show has gained a cult-like following among trivia buffs and game show fans.

The theme song is instantly recognizable and has been used in a wide variety of media from comedy sketches to major motion pictures.

How it All Began

In the 1950s there was growing frustration from the public with quiz shows. Scandals were erupting, and producers were being accused of providing answers to contestants and rigging the results. Jeopardy! was an answer to this frustration, attempting to provide a departure from traditional quiz shows by asking contestants to give their answers in the form of a question. The show caught on and enjoyed a successful daytime run from 1964 to 1975.

The original Jeopardy! game show was hosted by Art Flemming and aired on NBC. After 11 years on the air, the show was canceled. Jeopardy! enjoyed a brief, one-season revival in 1978 and was once again canceled because of poor ratings.

The New Jeopardy

In 1984, CBS picked up the show and transformed it into a prime-time program with a brand new host.

With Alex Trebek at the helm, Jeopardy! returned in syndication in 1984. The show has been on the air ever since, airing five times a week on local CBS affiliate stations.

The Game

Jeopardy! pits three contestants against one another in every episode. Two of these contestants are new, while the third is the returning champion from the previous game.

Returning champions can play the game for as long as they keep on winning. The first two rounds of the game allow contestants to answer clues and rack up some money, while the final round in a winner-takes-all, one-question battle.

The Jeopardy Round

The first round is called the Jeopardy Round. Six trivia categories are posted on the board, with a column of five clues below each category. The clues are hidden by dollar amounts, which increase in value from top to bottom. The higher the dollar amount, the tougher the clue.

Players begin by choosing a category and a dollar amount. Trebek reads the clue, and the contestants must buzz in with a hand-held buzzer for the opportunity to answer the question. The twist in the game is that the answers must come in the form of a question. For example, if the clue were to read, This game show is hosted by Alex Trebek, the answer would be, What is Jeopardy? Whoever answers correctly gets the money value of the question added to their pot.

Double Jeopardy

The second round works the same as the Jeopardy Round, but with new categories and slightly harder questions, and the money values are doubled. If any contestant finishes the Double Jeopardy round with no money in their bank, he is disqualified from playing the final round.

The Final Round

The final round consists of a single question. Trebek announces the category, and contestants must then wager some or all of their current earnings. The clue is read, and, as the show s theme song plays in the background, contestants must write their answer to the clue (still in the form of a question) on an electronic board in front of them.

When time is up, the answers are revealed one by one. If a contestant gets the answer correct, the amount wagered is added to his score. If the answer is incorrect, the amount wagered is deducted. The person with the most money at the end of this round is the winner, and returns to play the game again in the next episode.

Tournaments and Theme Weeks

Jeopardy hosts a number of regular tournaments and theme weeks. These include:

Discover surprising insights and little-known facts about politics, literature, science, and the marvels of the natural world.

Fun Facts

  • Jeopardy! airs in various international versions in more than 25 countries.
  • Before 2004, a contestant could win a maximum of five games. After winning a full week s worth of shows, the contestant was retired and guaranteed a seat in the next Tournament of Champions. This rule was eliminated in the show s 21st season.
  • Ken Jennings is the record holder for the longest winning streak. Jennings won a whopping 74 games in 2002, before being defeated in Final Jeopardy by Nancy Zerg. He accumulated $2,520,700 in prize money during those 74 appearances.
  • A spin-off show called Rock Roll Jeopardy aired on VH1 from 1998 to 2001. It was hosted by Jeff Probst, who is now the host of the reality show Survivor.
  • From 1984 to 1990, contestants winnings were capped at $75,000. Any money earned over that amount was donated to a charity chosen by the winner. The cap was eventually raised and then eliminated completely.
  • The Jeopardy! theme song is called Think and was composed by Griffin as a lullaby for his son.
