Meet the man behind eHarmony

Dr. Neil Clark Warren, Founder

Dr. Warren is a clinical psychologist and author of eight books on love, marriage and emotional health. During 35 years of counseling thousands of married couples, Dr. Warren observed a set of characteristics that seemed to be present in all successful relationships. He called them the 29 Dimensions of Compatibility. After extensive research involving thousands of married couples, Dr. Warren confirmed that these dimensions were indeed highly predictive of relationship success and could be used to match singles. Ten years later, eHarmony’s compatibility matching is responsible for nearly 4% of U.S. marriages.*

There is nothing constant in this world except change. Love can fade. The one who always loves and protects you might be the one who will hate and hurt you. The person who looks up on you might be the person who will loo k down on you in the future. Read more

The inconstancy of friends and friendship. We are motivated by different things – and friends are no less different. But when these actions disagree with your own, you try to hang on as a friend, even knowing what they a re doing is foolish – paper wings. X Ambassadors Unsteady

I have a son with mental illness and to me this song sums up what it does to a family. So to me this would be sung from the perspective of my son. He knows he does wrong. He is constantly apologizing. We go through hell. He knows he IS unsteady but he also knows he needs us. We do feel alone because his issues make friendships hard and they affect the relationship between me and my husband. I know there are other meanings but this is what it means to me and it breaks my heart. Whenever I am so mad at him for the things he does I think of him begging for us to not let (him) go. Making it more sad is the progression of time with it starting out calling the parents mama/daddy and then mother/dad, showing nothing has changed over time. Read more

Them Crooked Vultures Dead End Friends

This can be taken in many ways. I took it like this: The narrator does not know what he is in life, hence the “I follow the road, blind, until the road is dead end,” “Dead end” meaning he draws a blank to his ideas. He thinks some laws are just meant to “herd us over the cliff,” or are harmful instead of helpful. He wants to know “what puzzle peice fell out” of him, meaning he wants to know where it all went wrong. He has friends that are “dead ends,” and he is reluctant to join them in their mischief. He “aches for the touch” of them, meaning he wants them to be back to normal, away from trouble. He slowly realizes that he is just like them, a dead end, becuase of a “look in your eyes.” It is unclear who this “your” is, possibly one of the friends, or a girlfriend, as he says “hold me real close then do it again,” meaning they might have had sex. He states that he is becoming a dead end in the following line: “I can tell, by that look in your eyes. We’re the same, my dead end friends and I.” He then starts accepting the fact that he has become a dead end when he states: “We drive all alone at night, A never ending begin. Sweet as a curse just out of reach, Awakens the dead end part of me and oh, No more wandering. Just me and my dead end friends again.” He knows that he has become a dead end and accepts it. He knows he WANTS to be a dead end when he says “No more wandering.” He has accepted it and loves being with his friends again, even if they break some laws doing it. In all, this song is about a man who wants to find out who he really is. He finally finds it when he joins his friends in mischief. Read more

Miley Cyrus Wrecking Ball

My favorite song by Turisas, and one of my favorites of all time. It may be sometimes overlooked because of its length, but it deserves as much recognition as possible, The song tells the story of the fall of the Byzanti ne Empire, and expands upon this to work on the definition of history itself. The stars and moon, feared by the singer, are common Islamic symbols, and refer to the overthrow of the Byzantine Empire by the nascent Ottoman Empire, a “new power on the rise.” The “walls” referred to as falling are the Theodosian Walls, which protected Constantinople for 1000 years before falling to the Ottomans. Personally, my favorite lyric in this song is “As long as you spend / There is more for you to lend / Someone always saves us in the end.” This represents to me the fiscal disaster that the Empire became during the last few emperors after the Sack of Constantinople in 1204, and the apathy that they sank into. As a student of history, this apathy is familiar as that of the Western Roman Empire, Venice, and numerous other once-great powers that were either abandoned by their allies or simply pummeled to a pulp, and at the end simply resigned themselves to their fate. Other lyrics throughout the song express disbelief at the fact that the Empire has fallen, and that their time “ended so fast”–in fact, the Ultimus Romanorum was the last vestige of one of the longest-lived empires in history, and its fall showed that everything must end. The final choruses, soaring and majestic, are incredibly powerful as the last gasp of a dying empire, and the silence that follows them carries enormous symbolism. The End of an Empire is a tragic, majestic thing, and I think Turisas has done an amazing job conveying this in their song. Read more

Mylene Farmer Comme J ai Mal

This song talks about what a woman is feeling when she’s too deeply in love with someone (“Je m’abîme d’être moi-même – “I damage myself to be myself”). She wants to have a new start before the wind tears her and her feelings apart, not wanting to show how she suffers. She wants to leave the world she’s living in to reach a better place, knowing what the others literally see in her eyes. In the 2 verses, Mylene sings it all, and the very dynamic chorus is very interesting too. In my opinion, this song is one of her musically best successes, along with “Stolen Car” and “City of Love”. LPNs? What do they do? Where can they work? Difference between LPN vs RN?

Many people ask the same repetitive questions about licensed practical nurses (LPNs). To some, their role in healthcare is shrouded in mystery. The intended purpose of this article is to answer a handful of these questions while facilitating more understanding regarding the unique role of the LPN.

I have heard and read the same questions rather frequently. Heck, I am almost certain that you have probably encountered these very same questions, too.

  • What is an LPN?
  • What type of stuff do LPNs do?
  • Where can LPNs work?
  • What is the difference between LPNs and RNs?

I will approach each of these questions separately with the genuinely heartfelt hope of clearing up some of the misconceptions surrounding LPNs.

What exactly is an LPN?

First of all, LPN is an acronym that stands for licensed practical nurse. Forty-eight American states and most of the the Canadian provinces utilize the title of LPN. The remaining two states in the union (California and Texas) use the acronym LVN, which stands for licensed vocational nurse. The Canadian province of Ontario refers to their practical nurses as RPNs, which is an acronym that stands for registered practical nurse. Despite the slightly different titles, LPNs, LVNs, and RPNs are one and the same. According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, a licensed practical nurse is defined as a person who has undergone training and obtained a license to provide routine care to the sick.

What do LPNs do?

Well, the answer to this question is highly dependent upon the state or province in which the LPN practices nursing. Some state boards of nursing, such as the ones in Texas and Oklahoma, have extremely wide scopes of practice that permit LPNs to do almost anything that individual facility policies will allow. LPNs in states with wide scopes of practice are usually allowed to perform most of the same skills that their RN coworkers can do, such as initiating IV starts, administering medications via IV push, maintaining central lines, and so forth. Other boards of nursing, such as the ones in California and New York, have narrow scopes of practice that severely limit what LPNs in those two states are allowed to do.

In general, LPNs in all states perform nursing care such as medication administration, data collection on patients, monitoring for changes in condition, vital sign checks, wound care and dressing changes, specimen collection, urinary catheter insertion and care, care of patients with ventilators and tracheostomies, ostomy site care and maintenance, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and finger stick blood sugar testing. Proper charting and documentation of nursing care is also the LPN’s responsibility.

The LPN works under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN) or physician in most states; however, the LPN is often the only licensed nurse present in many facilities. LPNs also supervise nursing assistants in certain healthcare settings. With the right mix of experience, LPNs can be promoted to administrative positions such as wellness directors, assistant directors of nursing, wound care clinicians, staffing coordinators, and case managers.

Where can LPNs work?

LPNs can and do work in acute care hospitals, although this type of employment seems to be on the decline in many regions in the United States due to issues surrounding scope of practice. LPNs also secure employment in nursing homes, hospices, home health, private duty cases, psychiatric hospitals, prisons/jails, rehabilitation facilities, group homes, clinics, doctors’ offices, assisted living facilities, agencies, military instillations, and schools.

What are the differences between LPNs and RNs?

Well, my answer might generate disagreement, although I do not intend to offend anyone. Some would say that RNs have attained a wider breadth of educational experiences that include pathophysiology, pharmacology, leadership, research, management, legal/ethical issues, and team functioning. In most cases, the LPN has completed an educational program that is shorter in length than his/her RN counterpart. The RN typically initiates the plan of care while the LPN contributes and adds to it. Finally, the LPN usually earns less money than his/her RN coworkers, though this is not always the case.

My overarching goal was to answer some of the most common questions that are asked about LPNs. The LPN is very much a nurse, as well as a vitally important member of the healthcare team. Together we can continue to facilitate more understanding regarding the role of the LPN to benefit our patients, colleagues, the public, and society as a whole.

By the way, I have heard so many people saying, The LPN is only a certificate/diploma program. This is not accurate.

LPNs in the U.S. can earn a certificate/diploma, associate of applied science (AAS) degree in practical nursing. or challenge a couple of state boards. Click on the link below to read about the different educational pathways available to people who want to become LPNs in the U.S.

Thanks for the post. I really really don’t mean to start a RN vs LPN thread. Please don’t get offended. But the bolded area, seriously, what does this mean? Has anybody ever heard of this? Which college/university offers this? Or where in BON can we look that up?

You either have Associate in Applied Science (RN), which could also be called Associate degree in nursing. Or you have Diploma in Practical Nursing (LPN). There is no such thing as associate of applied science (AAS) degree in practical nursing . LPN is not a degree in nursing. Lowest degree in nursing is Associates and that leads to RN.
Thanks for the post, but that very section was not accurate.

I respectfully disagree with you. The associate of applied science (AAS) in practical nursing certainly exists at many community colleges and state universities in the U.S.

A person can choose one of three paths to become an LPN: certificate/diploma, associate degree, or challenging the board (a couple of states still allow this). Click on the first link below to read about the educational pathways that lead to initial LPN licensure. Click on the second link to read about the practical nursing AAS program at North Seattle Community College.

I’ve noticed the certainty with which people claim LPNs cannot do this or that is inversely related to how long they’ve been a student or new nurse – so I think you’re right, Mrs. H. — that we can attribute a lot of the misinformation to nursing school faculty.

One thing the article didn’t mention was the length of LPN educations and how they vary.I am an RPN in Ontario and our programs are two years long.Excellent article.

I wrote another post recently that discusses in detail the different types of educational entries into practical nursing. However, I focused heavily on LPNs in the United States. Click on the link below if you are interested.
http://allnurses.com/lpn-lvn-nursing. ad-743076.html

I think it’s best to compare program length by contact hours. My LVN program was 1500 hours over 52 weeks. 1,040 hours were clinical the rest was theory hours. The course was 5 days a week 32-36 hours a week. They offered the same program over 1.5 years with 2 evenings and every other weekend.

Regardless of the number of hours as a percentage of contact hours I’ve noticed LPN/LVN do more well practical hands on. Not more overall but as a ratio.

Quota system to close gender gap on Hong Kong corporate boards may do more harm than good

Three years after Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEx) adopted a rule change to promote gender diversity on corporate boards, there has been limited progress with women accounting for little more than one in every 10 of the top positions.

About 11.3 per cent of the directors of Hang Seng Index constituent companies were female, up from 9.6 per cent last year, according to a recent survey by non-profit organisation Community Business. But the rise was propelled by only a handful of companies , and nearly three quarters of firms have made little progress in tackling the gender imbalance issue since 2009, the organisation noted.

A concerted and multi-pronged effort by different sectors in Hong Kong in recent years has not brought about a faster pace of change, even with momentum globally on this issue, the report said.

A separate study by Community Business found that women make up 45.7 per cent of middle level staff in Hong Kong, but occupy fewer than one third of senior management roles.

The biggest challenge is getting chairmen to think about the benefits of having women on boards, said Nick Marsh, managing director with executive search firm Harvey Nash, Asia Pacific. While women s representation in Hong Kong boardrooms continues to lag behind that of the US and most European countries, some of the city s Asian neighbours such have been taking steps to catch up.

Women make up 45.7 per cent of middle level staff in Hong Kong, but occupy fewer than one third of senior management roles

India s stock exchange last year imposed a quota of one female director on the board of every listed firm, which has helped Indian companies overtake their Hong Kong counterparts in the number of women taking board seats for the first time in history. That has raised a question whether HKEx should follow India s lead and implement a similar quota system.

Ga lle Olivier, the Hong Kong-based chief executive officer, general insurance with AXA Asia, said she was against the idea of gender quotas to boost the share of women executives.

It does more harm than good for a company to promote women only because it needs to meet corporate governance rules. The key issue lies in shifting people s mindsets and building up a pipeline of women leaders to help them go further up to the corporate ladder, Olivier said.

Norway and Sweden, which were among the first in the world to introduce quotas, have ratios of women directors above 28 per cent, placing the two nations at the top of the global rankings of boardroom gender diversity.

But in Norway, introducing quotas resulted in a closed circle of women holding directorship positions in the country, which may not be an ideal situation, Marsh said. Also, women themselves will not be happy if they know they are offered a particular position only because their employers have to accomplish their legal mandate.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong s stock exchange regulators are not likely to push for a stronger legislative action to shape a gender balanced board in listed companies, at least for the time being.

I know they are supportive, but clearly, they do not want to go into a law that talks about quotas, Marsh said.

A better approach for the HKEx is to put in place transparency rules that require companies to report on the composition of both their senior management and board.

This will help expose appointments of senior management to public and media scrutiny, as well as make it easier for headhunters to find qualified women candidates, March said.

As a result of the opaque system, local executive search firms frequently look overseas when seeking to find qualified women to fill local corporate board positions. Currently, there is a more visible pool of talent in the United States, said Marsh, whose firm has recruited Chinese-speaking women from abroad to fill spots in Hong Kong companies.

Sure, retailers enjoy cashing in at this time of year, when shoppers are giving their credit cards a workout. (Last year back-to-school and college spending was estimated at a whopping $68 billion.) But with a strategy in place, you can conquer your shopping like a champ, even when no sales are in sight. That s right: You can actually guarantee yourself a discount, whether you re buying a laptop or leather boots. Here s a roundup of some stellar ways to save.

    1. Get Carded
Money blogger Karen Cordaway recommends buying discounted gift cards to stores like Old Navy and JCPenney. That ensures savings before the sales even begin, she says. At GiftCardGranny.com. you can purchase other people s unwanted gift cards for up to 59 percent less than the stored value. Or use the free app Raise. which lets you buy and redeem cards on the spot for chains like Target, Macy s, and Sephora. The gift cards sell at an average discount of 12 percent.

Fall Frenzy: Average spending on back-to-school items grew 42 percent between 2005 and 2015.

    2. Shop the Supersales
If you re in the market for an outdoor grill or patio furniture, September is the best month to strike: Waning demand equals steep discounts of up to 60 percent. We ve seen a four-burner gas grill drop from about $256 in April to $175 around Labor Day, says Benjamin Glaser, features editor at the site DealNews. Late summer and early fall are also the best times to buy a laptop, thanks to retailers vying for back-to-school dollars. Keep your eye out for markdowns at Microsoft.com and Best Buy.

Hot Stuff: 75 percent of American adults own a barbecue grill or smoker.

    3. Buy Now, Save Later
Keep receipts in your wallet for a couple of weeks if the price of an item you purchased drops within 14 days, stores like Gap and Kohl s will refund you the difference. And with so much competition among retailers, sales are happening left and right, says retail analyst Kristin Bentz. Markdowns can occur weekly, so it pays to visit often and watch closely, she says.

Cash Back: Shopping online? You can still try for a price adjustment, with the help of the website and app Paribus. After you link your email with it, the tool detects any receipts in your inbox and contacts retailers on your behalf to get money back if the price drops within a store’s price-adjustment time frame.

    4. Earn a Charm Discount
Your attitude can mean the difference between paying full price and receiving a markdown. It s a scarily simple tactic, says Mark Ellwood, author of Bargain Fever. My friend asked for a discount at a Prada store overseas and was stunned when they instantly offered him 20 percent off. His prescription: Smile and say, I love this, but it s a bit expensive. How might I be able to get a discount? There s usually some solution, he says, such as a friends-and-family coupon or a secret sale for VIP customers.
