Let’s not beat around the bush. This is no ordinary election, it’s a battle for America. We have two very different presidential candidates, who are selling two very different visions of the kind of America we had in the past, the kind of America we have right now, and the kind of America we should have in the future.

Why is Patrick Murphy suddenly invisible to national party leaders? Sure, has him polling on average 5.5 percentage points behind Marco Rubio, but not so long ago the congressman was the Democrats’ anointed one in Florida, expected to flip the U.S. Senate seat from red to blue.

Only in the strangest-ever presidential election could a former beauty queen’s weight be considered a deal-breaking issue of, if I may, gargantuan proportions.

And now, less than six weeks from the election, what is the main event of the day? A fight between the GOP presidential nominee and a former Miss Universe, whom he had 20 years ago called Miss Piggy and other choice pejoratives.

Donald Trump supporters can disparage many of the meritless, petty attacks on their candidate, from the so-called “Star of David scandal” to the holes-in-Melania-Trump’s-immigration story. I don’t blame them. I disparage them, too. But I must tell you this: If Trump secretly conducted business in communist Cuba while Fidel Castro was its president, the Republican presidential nominee should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, not elected to the highest office in the land.

Gov. Jeb Bush was universally acclaimed for his steadfast leadership during the torrent of hurricanes that ravaged Florida during his terms in office. And, indeed, he deserves everyone’s praise, because he did a remarkable job preparing Florida for hurricanes. But then he really shone by getting into the details of helping communities recover post-hurricane.

Looking on the bright side, perhaps this election can teach conservatives to look on the dark side. They need a talent for pessimism, recognizing the signs that whatever remains of American exceptionalism does not immunize this nation from decay, to which all regimes are susceptible.

Updated: Aug 18, 2016 Posted on Jan 29, 2009 at 10:47 am

If you copy this free state maps list, please link back to HIF and mention that it was originally put together by me. I worked hard on this list and only ask for recognition.

Below you ll find a full list of free state maps available from most state tourism departments. As a fail-safe, I ve linked to any state Department of Transportation that also provides free maps.

Here s to never getting lost again!

Free Alabama State Map This is the first .travel website I ve ever seen. Cool story, huh?

Free Alaska State Map Here s the first case of so, does this come with a map? (dot map )

Free Arizona State Map Their site promotes Old West activities. The hell is that? Like riding around on a horse and shooting pistols in the air? If so, Arizona, here I come!

Free Arkansas State Map They have a plethora of travel brochures and even a Living in Arkansas guide for those considering moving there. Wait, where are you going? (dot map )

Free California State Map I would have been ticked had they not offered some free maps, considering the fact that I see their freaking tourism commercial every 10 minutes.

Free Colorado State Map Their site tagline is come to life. Sounds like they re reanimating the dead out there.

Free Connecticut State Map It looks like they finally got their act together and made a Getaway Guide. There s got to be a map somewhere in it, right?

Free Delaware State Map The only thing I know about this state is that Vice President Biden and Aubrey Plaza are both from there. Does that make you want to visit more or less now? (dot map. look for the free options)

Free Florida State Map When I first made this list in 2009, there was an Authentic Florida Expert everywhere on the site. She looked like a stereotypical grandma, but now she s nowhere to be seen. Uh oh, you know what that means

Free Georgia State Map If I know Georgia, they ll also send you a peach.

Free Hawaii State Map Screw the map, their site has some cool pictures of volcanoes and lava!

Free Idaho State Map Judging by their governors name alone (C.L. Butch Otter), he could probably beat up any other governor out there. You just know he wears a cowboy hat and checking their website yep! (dot map )

Free Illinois State Map Note that you can request up to 25 free state maps at the DOT site, which are 24 more than I need. (dot map )

Free Indiana State Map Indiana earns the distinction of being the first state site I ve seen with a prominently displayed free things to do here! section. I guess that s what it takes to get people to come to anywhere in Indiana outside of Pawnee. (dot map )

Free Iowa State Map Just the place to go if you re really excited for the 2016 Presidential election. Weirdo.

Free Kansas State Map Quick, can you name three cities in Kansas. Neither could I. (dot map )

Free Kentucky State Map Their state logo is by far the best I ve seen yet. (dot map )

Free Louisiana State Map I have nothing bad to say about Louisiana. New Orleans is an awesome fucking town.

Free Maine State Map While signing up they want you to be sure to indicate which regions of Maine and activities interest you. Uhhh, does eating lobster and telling people I ve been to Maine count as interests?

Free Maryland State Map I can t tell you the number of times the state of Maryland has screwed me over, so visit with caution. I hated Baltimore years before The Wire ever aired. (dot map )

Free Massachusetts State Map I ve still yet to ever correctly spell this state s name. It s the only item on my Bucket List I doubt I ll ever accomplish.

Free Michigan State Map Michigan s page has a section called Air Zoo. I didn t check it out, but only because I m sure it ll be a letdown. (dot map )

Free Minnesota State Map I m getting tired of writing these.

Free Mississippi State Ma p I always forget how to spell this state. What comes after the Q again? (dot maps )

Free Missouri State Map Their site advertises that internships are available. For the whole state? (dot map )

Free Montana State Map They offer a free winter guide in addition to the state map, but I can give you said guide right here. Step 1: stay inside. Step 2: come outside once spring arrives.

Free Nebraska State Map Nebraska wants us to share the road trip. See, even their own tourism board thinks the best part of Nebraska is driving away from it! (dot map )

Free Nevada State Map Fill out the form you ll get a free state maps for the price of none!

Free New Hampshire State Map Their phone number is 800-FUN-IN-NH. I wonder how many people call it looking for 800-DUNG-ON-I

Free New Jersey State Map It s never too early to begin planning your next New Jersey getaway vacation! Really? Fine, I want to book a room for August 10-12, 2081.

Free New Mexico State Map NM should capitalize on Breaking Bad and change their slogan to Come for the meth. Stay for nature. They appear to charge shipping fees for their travel guides, however their DOT page says you can call or email for a free state road map. (dot map )

Free New York State Map I always thought the I Heart NY campaign was for the city, not the state. Shows what I know.

Free North Carolina State Map They offer a free winery and Civil War travel guide. It s as if they were targeting me alone. (dot map )

Free North Dakota State Map I heard North Dakota exists, guess it s not a myth!

Free Ohio State Map Their website is Ahh, I found it! *points to map.* Call off the search and let s rename this place Goobtopia. (dot map )

Free Oklahoma State Map I m kind of interested in their additional Agritourism Map. Is this a tourist industry that Oklahoma made up? (dot map )

Free Oregon State Map I love that they also offer an official kid s guide to Oregon. Like it s that complicated. Hey kids! Are your parents coming here? Then so are you! Now shut it. (dot map )

Free Rhode Island State Map Put down that spreadsheet, tear yourself away from your inbox for a second, and fill out this form. RUN, THEY RE WATCHING US!

Free South Carolina State Map Home state, represent! Don t be fooled by the domain name, it s legit. We re a sneaky bunch, just ask Major Robert Anderson.

Free South Dakota State Map Ok, wait a minute here. South Carolina s slogan: Smiling Faces, Beautiful Places. South Dakota s slogan: Great Faces, Great Places. It s like South Dakota wasn t even trying!

Free Tennessee State Map I doubt their slogan of we re playing your song is accurate. I doubt there s a lot of polka music being played there. (dot map )

Free Texas State Map Their travel guide is 272 freaking pages long. That s not a guide, it s a book.

Free Utah State Map First off, I m extremely disappointed Utah removed the separate checkbox for German visitors, as it completely ruined my Utah being a vacation mecca for Germans joke. Second off, Utah is charging for maps now! Luckily I found a backup option, as their travel guide form has a box for a free highway map. (dot map )

Free Vermont State Map I m not sure how all the seasonal maps differ from each other, but it s nice knowing that I have so many options with them.

Free Virginia State Map I once living in Virginia. It was as exciting as this story. (dot map )

Free Washington State Map As a Mariners fan and frequent traveler to the Pacific Northwest, I must say I absolutely love this section of the world. Unfortunately they re yet another state asking money for a map. Their DOT offers a high-res online version though. (dot map page and hi-res map )

Free West Virginia State Map I image WV looking like a scene from Justified but with more coal and moonshine. (dot map )

Free Wisconsin State Map I spent some time in Wisconsin recently. Believe the hype. They ve got some good cheese. (dot map )

Free Wyoming State Map I updated their slogan to Wyoming: Forever west. Until continental drift takes care of that.

That took a lot longer than I thought it would. I need a vacation.

      What People Says About Us.

Just wanted to let you know, I used OLT for the first time this tax season and I couldn’t be happier with the results. It’s very thorough but yet easy to use. Needless to say, I will be using OLT next year. Thanks!

I got my state refund back in 6 days, and federal back in 11 days. Easy, honest and FREE! Thanks OLT, you are by far the best! I will be back next year and will recommend to my friends and family.

Just a short note of thanks for your excellent tax service! In the past I had always prepared my own tax reports, but decided to try your electronic route, which was very efficient & understandable. Very much appreciated.

I have ALWAYS before felt the need to do the whole process with at least 3 different online tax websites before I was confident that they were done properly. This time was a completely different experience, I have no doubt that they were done right. Your service is awesome and I will be back again next year!

Appreciate ease of using system for both Federal and State taxes. Still somewhat new using on-line tax programs. Your site was much easier than previous company’s site. This was the fastest tax forms have been sent, approved and processed!

I just wanted to say THANK YOU for such a simple, yet comprehensive, product. The little help links on the pages are great. I did my taxes on two different sites to compare. My refund was higher on your site (the other completely left out a category) and your price was lower. It was an all-around win!

This is a compliment concerning OLT’s website and service staff. The changes to your website make it very user friendly and easy to navigate. I had to ask a question and was pleased with the service. The fee that OLT charges for its premium service was very reasonable, and I will use OLT again.

I just wanted to send a quick note and THANK YOU for your product and services. I can’t tell you how long I’ve been filing my taxes with you, maybe 10 or more years. It’s never an issue. Great prices for the services. EASY to follow. Keep us the good work.

No question; just a HUGE COMPLIMENT to The 1st 2 weeks of April have found me sweating over complicated forms. Big time. This year is the 1st year I WAS ABLE TO BREEZE THROUGH FILING OUR TAXES – ALL BECAUSE OF OLT.COM! I LOVE you guys! I! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

On-Line Taxes is the BEST! I have been a customer for some time now and I can honestly say that On-Line Taxes has always been reliable accurate, outstanding customer service and a great turnaround time. I have never had a problem and in fact have always experienced friendly service.

Just a letter of appreciation for having this great site to amend my taxes. Really easy to follow I knew where I was during the entire process. You were the only site I could find with clear instructions of what where and how. Thank You for your Professional Tax Web Site.

No question just a huge thank you. Never have I ever seen such a well thought out simple easy to use fast and accurate and perfect web site. I ended up owing and yet I’m happy. The experience (think dread and despair and putting off to the last minute) was so perfect. Go figure. Well Done!

Excellent website and software. Very intuitive, fast and elegant. Thank you!

Wanted to let you know that I was really impressed with your online tax preparation package. Your input screens are the easiest I have used and are really thorough. I will be using your online site for doing my own taxes in the future. Keep up the good work.

Just wanted to take a moment to tell you how much stress you take out of the process of filing taxes. Thank you.

$20 debt leads to melee at Palm Coast Girl Scout cookie stand

    Feb 27, 2017 at 7:15 PM Mar 1, 2017 at 2:51 PM

A $20 debt led to chaos at a cookie stand outside a Palm Coast Wal-Mart when two teens attacked the family of a Girl Scout they said owed them.

PALM COAST A $20 debt led to chaos at a cookie stand outside a Palm Coast Wal-Mart when two teens attacked the family of a Girl Scout they said owed them the money.

Daniel Kennedy, 18, and his 16-year-old brother, whose name was not released, were both arrested in connection with the incident. Daniel Kennedy was charged with disorderly conduct and three counts of battery. His younger brother faces disorderly conduct and one count of battery.

Flagler sheriff: 2 brothers in melee at Scout’s cookie stand are “knuckleheads”

The incident much of which was captured on store video surveillance unfolded just after 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Flagler County sheriff’s deputies described a chaotic scene that left a table flipped over and boxes of Girl Scout cookies scattered across the sidewalk outside the east entrance to Wal-Mart, 174 Cypress Pointe Parkway, according to an arrest report.

When deputies arrived, Thomas Ketchum Sr. 49, of Palm Coast was lying on his back complaining of chest pains he said he suffered during the attack. He told deputies he was recovering from open heart surgery he underwent just three days before the incident.

Kennedy, his brother and their mother, Erin, told deputies they confronted the Girl Scout team at the cookie table over $20 they said Ketchum s daughter owed them. Ketchum s 47-year-old wife, Lisa, and another Palm Coast woman were present, and told the Kennedy family they could not pay them. That s when the Kennedys demanded to be paid in cookies instead.

When the Scout leaders refused, they told deputies the Kennedy brothers began snatching boxes of cookies, overturning the table and destroying the cookie stand.

Lisa Ketchum said Daniel Kennedy then began throwing punches to intimidate them. That s when her husband emerged from the store and grabbed the brothers shopping cart to keep them from leaving before officers arrived. He said Daniel Kennedy pushed him away and began punching him. Thomas Ketchum suffered a sprained neck and shoulder and was taken to Florida Hospital Flagler to be treated.

When Ketchum’s 15-year-old son tried to intervene to protect his father, Daniel Kennedy punched him then pushed him into a concrete wall, leaving him with a gash to the head, the report states. Lisa Ketchum told deputies Daniel Kennedy also punched her several times in the head and face.

Two women who were driving by during the incident also spoke to deputies. One of them, 18-year-old Gabrielle Boos, told officers she jumped out of their car, ran across the parking lot and began striking Kennedy as he attacked Lisa Ketchum until he let her go.

Kennedy was jailed at the Flagler County Inmate Facility. His bail information was not available Monday. Officers also booked his younger brother on the misdemeanor counts and issued him a March 17 court date before releasing him to his mother.

    Idaho Car Insurance

Idaho drivers enjoy state car insurance rates that are among the nation’s cheapest — if they shop around. But in every ZIP code — nearly all of Idaho’s cities and towns are mapped out below — the lowest-priced insurance company is hundreds of dollars less than the most expensive for the same coverage. That means that even if your state has some of the most lowest rates compared to the rest of the country, you can still save by comparing insurance companies. Enter your ZIP code and gender and choose from six age groups and three coverage levels to see what you can expect to pay and how much you can save.

    Idaho Car Insurance Laws

Idaho has very middle-of-the-road liability limits of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury and $15,000 for property damage. If you have a family or own a home, the industry standard for protection is 100/300/50.

Off-roading rules: Off-roading on ATVs, UTVs, motorbikes and other specialty off-roading vehicles is popular in Idaho. The requirements vary depending on where you are riding. Registration of your vehicle is almost always needed, but insurance may not be unless you are also driving on state or city roads with your vehicle.

Electronic proof of insurance is accepted: While it’s wise to still carry your paper insurance card in the vehicle or in your wallet, if you have proof of auto insurance on your smart phone or tablet, law enforcement and other state officials will accept it.

Violations, points and length on record: Idaho’s Transportation Department records moving violations that occur in Idaho, other states and Canada. Points stay on your record for three years after the conviction dates.

Discounts for ages 55+: Idaho auto insurance providers are required to offer older drivers (55+ years of age) a discount for completing an approved accident-prevention class. The discount is good for three years and is renewable.

Uninsured motorist penalties for Idaho: You may be fined $206, your license may be suspended and you may be required to file an SR-22 form. If you were driving without privileges (had your license suspended, revoked, etc. due to your previous citation), this offense is much more serious and carries a mandatory minimum of two days in jail, and up to six months. It also carries up to a $1000 fine, and it carries an additional license suspension of six months.

Electronic proof of insurance: Idaho is one of 31 states that allow drivers to show proof of insurance during a traffic stop on a smartphone.

LPNs? What do they do? Where can they work? Difference between LPN vs RN? #lpn-vs-rn,

LPNs? What do they do? Where can they work? Difference between LPN vs RN?

Many people ask the same repetitive questions about licensed practical nurses (LPNs). To some, their role in healthcare is shrouded in mystery. The intended purpose of this article is to answer a handful of these questions while facilitating more understanding regarding the unique role of the LPN.

I have heard and read the same questions rather frequently. Heck, I am almost certain that you have probably encountered these very same questions, too.

    • What is an LPN?
    • What type of stuff do LPNs do?
    • Where can LPNs work?
    • What is the difference between LPNs and RNs?

I will approach each of these questions separately with the genuinely heartfelt hope of clearing up some of the misconceptions surrounding LPNs.

    What exactly is an LPN?

First of all, LPN is an acronym that stands for licensed practical nurse. Forty-eight American states and most of the the Canadian provinces utilize the title of LPN. The remaining two states in the union (California and Texas) use the acronym LVN, which stands for licensed vocational nurse. The Canadian province of Ontario refers to their practical nurses as RPNs, which is an acronym that stands for registered practical nurse. Despite the slightly different titles, LPNs, LVNs, and RPNs are one and the same. According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, a licensed practical nurse is defined as a person who has undergone training and obtained a license to provide routine care to the sick.

    What do LPNs do?

Well, the answer to this question is highly dependent upon the state or province in which the LPN practices nursing. Some state boards of nursing, such as the ones in Texas and Oklahoma, have extremely wide scopes of practice that permit LPNs to do almost anything that individual facility policies will allow. LPNs in states with wide scopes of practice are usually allowed to perform most of the same skills that their RN coworkers can do, such as initiating IV starts, administering medications via IV push, maintaining central lines, and so forth. Other boards of nursing, such as the ones in California and New York, have narrow scopes of practice that severely limit what LPNs in those two states are allowed to do.

In general, LPNs in all states perform nursing care such as medication administration, data collection on patients, monitoring for changes in condition, vital sign checks, wound care and dressing changes, specimen collection, urinary catheter insertion and care, care of patients with ventilators and tracheostomies, ostomy site care and maintenance, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and finger stick blood sugar testing. Proper charting and documentation of nursing care is also the LPN’s responsibility.

The LPN works under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN) or physician in most states; however, the LPN is often the only licensed nurse present in many facilities. LPNs also supervise nursing assistants in certain healthcare settings. With the right mix of experience, LPNs can be promoted to administrative positions such as wellness directors, assistant directors of nursing, wound care clinicians, staffing coordinators, and case managers.

    Where can LPNs work?

LPNs can and do work in acute care hospitals, although this type of employment seems to be on the decline in many regions in the United States due to issues surrounding scope of practice. LPNs also secure employment in nursing homes, hospices, home health, private duty cases, psychiatric hospitals, prisons/jails, rehabilitation facilities, group homes, clinics, doctors’ offices, assisted living facilities, agencies, military instillations, and schools.

What are the differences between LPNs and RNs?

Well, my answer might generate disagreement, although I do not intend to offend anyone. Some would say that RNs have attained a wider breadth of educational experiences that include pathophysiology, pharmacology, leadership, research, management, legal/ethical issues, and team functioning. In most cases, the LPN has completed an educational program that is shorter in length than his/her RN counterpart. The RN typically initiates the plan of care while the LPN contributes and adds to it. Finally, the LPN usually earns less money than his/her RN coworkers, though this is not always the case.

My overarching goal was to answer some of the most common questions that are asked about LPNs. The LPN is very much a nurse, as well as a vitally important member of the healthcare team. Together we can continue to facilitate more understanding regarding the role of the LPN to benefit our patients, colleagues, the public, and society as a whole.

By the way, I have heard so many people saying, The LPN is only a certificate/diploma program. This is not accurate.

LPNs in the U.S. can earn a certificate/diploma, associate of applied science (AAS) degree in practical nursing. or challenge a couple of state boards. Click on the link below to read about the different educational pathways available to people who want to become LPNs in the U.S.

Thanks for the post. I really really don’t mean to start a RN vs LPN thread. Please don’t get offended. But the bolded area, seriously, what does this mean? Has anybody ever heard of this? Which college/university offers this? Or where in BON can we look that up?

You either have Associate in Applied Science (RN), which could also be called Associate degree in nursing. Or you have Diploma in Practical Nursing (LPN). There is no such thing as associate of applied science (AAS) degree in practical nursing . LPN is not a degree in nursing. Lowest degree in nursing is Associates and that leads to RN.
Thanks for the post, but that very section was not accurate.

I respectfully disagree with you. The associate of applied science (AAS) in practical nursing certainly exists at many community colleges and state universities in the U.S.

A person can choose one of three paths to become an LPN: certificate/diploma, associate degree, or challenging the board (a couple of states still allow this). Click on the first link below to read about the educational pathways that lead to initial LPN licensure. Click on the second link to read about the practical nursing AAS program at North Seattle Community College.

I’ve noticed the certainty with which people claim LPNs cannot do this or that is inversely related to how long they’ve been a student or new nurse – so I think you’re right, Mrs. H. — that we can attribute a lot of the misinformation to nursing school faculty.

One thing the article didn’t mention was the length of LPN educations and how they vary.I am an RPN in Ontario and our programs are two years long.Excellent article.

I wrote another post recently that discusses in detail the different types of educational entries into practical nursing. However, I focused heavily on LPNs in the United States. Click on the link below if you are interested. ad-743076.html

I think it’s best to compare program length by contact hours. My LVN program was 1500 hours over 52 weeks. 1,040 hours were clinical the rest was theory hours. The course was 5 days a week 32-36 hours a week. They offered the same program over 1.5 years with 2 evenings and every other weekend.

Regardless of the number of hours as a percentage of contact hours I’ve noticed LPN/LVN do more well practical hands on. Not more overall but as a ratio.
