Avira Free Antivirus

The free antivirus category is a crowded one with well-entrenched products, but Avira distinguishes itself with a low-key approach, a clean and compact interface, and a wide variety of optional settings.

A professional-grade interface: Free programs and utilities often look kludgy and dated and have confusing or cryptic navigation. Avira, however, feels like software that you would ordinarily pay for. It almost looks like something built into the operating system, and you can navigate using either the left-hand pane or the drop-down menus along the top.

Lots of optional configuration: Avira works just fine out of the box, capable of running system scans without slowing down other tasks, like loading webpages or editing a document. But if you want, you can change settings like the number of days before Avira warns you that its definition file (basically, a book of virus mug shots) is out of date. You can also specify what types of compressed files you want to be scanned or ignored, ignore specific files or processes, target specific file extensions, and search for root kits before scanning. It’s unusual to find this many options in a free antivirus app — and you must have administrator privileges to change anything, so secondary accounts can’t log in and tamper with it.

No hard sell: Unlike many free antivirus apps, Avira Antivirus Free is mostly content to run in the background and quietly do its thing. You’ll get the occasional pop-up window, but it’s not distracting.

SafeSearch Plus has issues: Avira offers the SafeSearch Plus browser add-on during installation. It puts a button in your browser that you click to enter a Web search, and the results are sanitized by Avira to reduce the chance of you being led to a malicious page. It looks very much like Google and even plugs into Google Maps, but the add-on will pop up a window urging you to change how your New Tab page works — every single time you open a new tab. It also doesn’t appear to work in Firefox — the change never takes effect, and you just keep getting the pop up every time you open a new tab. It works fine in Chrome, but in this browser it also redirects you to its own search engine instead of Google when you use Chrome’s address bar to search for things, which is a bit further than we’d like to go. Thankfully, you can skip installing SafeSearch Plus.

Not quite as good as a premium antivirus app: According to security software tests from AV-Test, one thing never changes: you get what you pay for. Avira Antivirus Free might be the all-around best antivirus app that you don’t have to pay for, in terms of speed, quality of scanning, and usability, but paid programs from Kaspersky, Bitdefender, and McAfee consistently edge it out. You can get some of these for pretty cheap if you shop around. And there can be fringe benefits as well to paid software — for example, your version of Norton is always the latest one as long as you have a subscription, and McAfee suites can now be used on an unlimited number of devices.

Bottom Line

If you’re tight on cash, Avira Free is a compelling option, as long as you skip SafeSearch Plus during installation. But a little extra insurance can go a long way, so we’d prefer to stick to the big guns from the major vendors.

| Version: Avira Free Antivirus

It finds hidden objects and issues warnings.

BUT, it doesn’t tell you what or where those hidden objects are nor what the warnings are about – even with the extended report option. Then, after an Internet search, I find that AVIRA suggests you download and install an add-on program in order to identify and delete those hidden objects.

I uninstalled AVIRA and told them that I was going back to programs like AVG, Avast or MalwareBytes that finds problems, identifies problems and gives you the option of deleting problems WITHOUT becoming a Master of AVIRA in order to figure out how to delete potential malware.

Reply by Net_Owl on September 27, 2016

In general if it is not a detection it is just an information. nothing more and nothing less. Avira describes exactly what hidden objects are:

So far running smooth and uses little resources

Not for older systems

| Version: Avira Free Antivirus

Detected malware (js) that MSE never picked up on.

Runs very slowly on older machine
Somewhat confusing presentation
Not as intuitive as other AV software I’ve used

It detected a lot of java malware in a browser that was not even installed on my system, and that Microsoft Security Essentials never picked up. The problem was that the program ran slowly and tanked my computer’s performance almost entirely. To be fair I’m running on hardware that is six years old, but this program brought an otherwise spry PC to a grind. My thoughts are that an antivirus program should be lithe, this wasn’t, at least for me.

Hi OctoberFox,
what are the hardware specifications of your system?
Which operating system are you using?

Free and is easy to use.

Slows the computer down and I had constant issues with email and using any web browser. Had to click twice and even three times to be able to go. Then I sit and wait. Uninstalled and went to Avast yesterday. That was a mistake too!

I am really starting to believe using any of the free programs comes with issues. It’s not worth even trying because if you resolve one issue by switching you create another.

Reply by Net_Owl on August 29, 2016

Hi Mikey,
Sorry to hear about your negative experience. I assume that there is a software conflict on your computer as Avira Free is a realtime and on demand scanner only and a slowed down computer is usual a sign that there is another Antivirus scanner active. Would be worth a try to sort things out and try again.

Slow to put on computer and hardly any protection

| Version: Avira Free Antivirus

I don’t have any as decided to uninstall and go back to Avast

Slow in actually putting on computer, No mail protection unless you buy it. Other free anti-virus protect your email but this doesn’t unless you pay. This is just a ver very very basic programme. It may protect your computer from virus but we all need mail protected to. Not willing to pay just for that as all the rest of the programme is just not needed. So beware of what you install.

Reply by StevenLimbrick on July 31, 2016

I may be a bit hasty in saying no email protection as I think none of the free versions protect your emails. Not sure if this is so. Trying Avast again as its not clear. Anyone know if this is so may help others to go for free or paid versions.

– Relatively low cost licensing
– Works well if you are able to install it
– Low Hardware Requirements

– Terrible Support: wont answer your emails and no phone where to call.
– I paid 5 licences and never was able to install it correctly. Eventually Support stopped answering me and after more than 5 emails to support, sales or anyone in the company. No Answer.

If I were to do it all again, I would buy something else from a better known company. the ‘runners up’ were a bit more expensive, but not in retrospective. they were not only programmers. they were CRM advocates too, and that at the end is important when thinking about the support you get.

Best Antivirus Software for Mac 2016 – Tom s Guide #free #internet #tv

#best free antivirus

Best Antivirus Software and Apps 2016

Best Mac Antivirus Software

You need an antivirus program on your Mac. That statement may cause some Apple users to stop listening and walk away, but with the amount of Mac malware on the internet today, this is no longer up for debate.

In 2012, there was the Flashback Trojan that infected 600,000 Macs. In 2013, a targeted attack hit OS X developers at Microsoft, Facebook, Twitter and Apple itself. In 2015, the XcodeGhost attack poisoned hundreds of OS X and iOS apps. And in early 2016, the first known piece of encrypting ransomware for Macs appeared.

After evaluating six free and paid Mac antivirus products, we’ve chose Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac ($40 per year) as our top pick. It offered lightning-fast scans and had a minimal impact on system performance, and was the only solution we reviewed that caught all malware.

Sophos Home for Mac is our favorite free option, as it provides very good malware protection and an easy-to-use interface while resulting in only a small performance hit.

How We Tested

To evaluate ease of use, interface and performance impact, we installed each AV program on the same late 2013 MacBook Pro with Retina Display running OS X El Capitan 10.11.4. It was powered by a 2.6-GHz Intel Core i7 processor and had 8GB of RAM and 23GB of data stored on a 512GB SSD.

We conducted our own tests in May and June 2016 based on how much each antivirus product affected our laptop’s performance. To do this, we used our custom OpenOffice benchmark, which matches 20,000 names and addresses in a spreadsheet. We timed how long it took to run a quick scan and a full scan while the laptop crunched numbers in the background.

We assessed how easy each program was to use and the number of useful extra features it offered (including free add-on software). To gauge how effective each package was at stopping malware, we used the results of evaluations conducted in June 2016 by AV-TEST, a well-regarded independent product-testing lab in Germany. AV-TEST tested the Mac anti-malware engines of each brand to see how well each detected malware during active scans (which AV-TEST calls “on-demand” scanning).

Sandboxie was an excellent addition to your internet security but it seems to crash my PC now, have not found a good alternative yet.

I also use Malwarebytes anti exploit (protection against zero day attacks) and Zemana anti logger to minimise effectiveness of key loggers in case they get through the defence. All of these programs are free.

I would not pay for AV and find there is no need to pay as long as you have a good backup strategy in place just incase you get something nasty on your PC. Another couple of things that will reduce your chance of infection are:

1. Install adblock plus on your browser.

2. Disable javascript on your browser (you can switch it on briefly if there is something on a site you really need to see)

3. Uninstall Java from your computer, this is known to be the biggest vulnerability that hackers use.

4. Uninstall adobe reader and flashplayer as they also contain vulnerabilities that hackers use.

5. Make sure your windows and all other programs are upto date with patches and that you are running the latest version.

I still use Norton Internet Security and it works like a charm

I will suggest you to go with norton security. this is the best security to use.

We uses AVIRA from all our software house outlets its very very good, our employee’s are also satisfied. Thumb(s) Up.

Kaspersky Total Security provides best protection for your Computer. It’s good, but the competition is better and cheaper.

The only problem I found with Avira is that is made Time Machine an my iMac terribly slow. After removing Avira the backup speed was back to normal again. I hope Avira will tackle this problem soon.

I am using Avira Free version. It apparently is regarded as the best, free or paid. HOWEVER, it is almost impossible to set up unless you are an MIT PhD in IT. And maybe not even then. The “scan” takes almost 3 days and slows and almost stops you from working on your PC. There is apparently no choice of scan option although it hints to a “quick” scan but good luck in finding how to set it up for running on a schedule. I allow the scan to run for a day then stop it so I can have the use of my computer back. There is no support for the free version and attempting to use the “forum” or “community” help it very close to useless. I had purchased the paid version a year ago, found it even more complicated than the free version and as a result cancelled it. Now how’s this for being ironic: I had Microsoft Windows Defender (free, along with Malwarebytes free) for over a year and experienced NO problems whatsoever. And it was so very easy to use. Go figure. If you go to Avira be ready to deal with the frustrations and aggravation.
PS: The upshot is I Googled “Top Rated Antivirus Programs” and found this article expounding on Avira. What’s a body to do? I think that I will keep my Malwarebytes and go back to Windows Defender as Avira is just so difficult.

I am using Comodo Free Antivirus for my Windows PC. It’s provides complete virus protection working perfectly. But here this product is missing. why?

Best Free Spyware and Malware Removal Software

Your computer is probably the most valuable asset in your home, even though it s not the most expensive. Gaining access to your computer can make a lot of money for creators of spyware, malware and ransomware. For example, a new ransomware called CryptoWall has been going around lately that encrypts everything on your hard drive and won t give you the decryption key until you pay them money.

A lot of systems become infected when someone opens an email attachment that appears to be safe, but in reality is malware. To protect yourself from those type of situations, you really need a real-time monitoring program in order to stop the malware from installing itself immediately.

I m going to mention a couple of great free anti-malware programs, but most of them do not include real-time monitoring in the free versions. Whether you should purchase the premium or pro versions depends on what kind of computer user you are. If you haven t gotten a virus or malware in many years, you probably know how to avoid these types of scams, but if you re uncertain about whether something is legitimate or not, it s probably a good idea to have more protection.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

One of the best tools for repairing malware infections is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. The free version includes anti-malware, anti-spyware and anti-rootkit protection. The big downside to the free version is that it does not include real-time protection or automated scans, so malware would not be blocked from installing itself onto your system and would only be removed once you ran a manual scan.

Overall, it s a great product and can really help you remove any pre-existing malware on your system. However, the real value of the program is in the real-time monitoring and protection available only in the premium version ($25).

Spybot Search Destroy

Spybot has been around for a very long time and has a very good track record of finding and removing spyware and malware. It s trustworthy and regularly updated.

When installing Spybot, you ll be asked whether you want to be protected automatically or whether you want more control and feedback from the program, so pick the option that suits you best.

Once you run the program, you ll need to click the update button on the second window to download the latest signatures.

Once complete, you can go back to the main window and perform a system or file scan. Again, there is no live protection in the free version. Also, the free version only has malware and rootkit protection, not virus protection. They have a Home version for $14 and a Professional version for $26.

It does have a feature called Immunization. which basically is website blocking of known malware sites. It s not enabled by default, so you have to manually enable it.

Ad-Aware has also been around for a very long time and is one of the best antivirus programs out there. When installing the program, make sure to uncheck the two boxes for SecureSearch as that is not really worth it. Google does just fine protecting your searches.

The best thing about Ad-Aware is that it supports real-time protection in the free version! Just about all the other programs require a paid version for real-time monitoring. They do have several paid versions ranging from $24 to $50, but you get a lot of protection without having to pay anything.

In the paid versions, you can also get email protection, which is really useful to avoid those nefarious attachments that can infect your system.

SUPERAntiSpyware is another spyware/malware removal program that has a long history. A lot of these older programs have gotten better and better over the years and that s why you keep hearing the same names over and over again.

Again, the free version does not include real-time protection, scheduled scans or automatic updates. The paid version is $20, but it s a yearly fee. I m willing to pay companies like Kaspersky a yearly subscription fee because they do an excellent job, but I really don t think SUPERAntiSpyware is worth $20 every year. If you plan to purchase an anti-spyware program, it s best to pick one of the above-mentioned ones instead.

AdwCleaner is probably the only program you may not have already heard about. Basically, this program focuses on toolbars, browser hijackers, adware, etc.

The program is very simple to use and there aren t any options to configure. Just click Scan. then go through the tabs to make sure everything checked is unwanted and then click Clean .

The program catches a lot of malware that other programs sometimes miss, so that s why I have mentioned it here. In my opinion after using malware programs for the last 15 years, these are the best options in terms of freeware. I would highly recommend, though, purchasing a full version of one of the programs for real-time protection. Enjoy!

Ad-Aware Free Antivirus +

Lavasoft’s Ad-Aware Free Antivirus+ combines Bitdefender’s advanced scanning technology with antispyware to provide you with top-of-the-line antivirus protection without system slowdowns.

Employs a trusted engine: Ad-Aware version 11 uses Bitdefender’s highly rated antivirus engine alongside its trusted antispyware platform. If you already have a trusted antivirus app installed, Ad-Aware can be added as a second layer of security.

Light on memory: Ad-Aware goes easy on your system resources — you can perform an active virus scan while surfing the Web.

Dependable detection: Ad-Aware’s false-positive results are low, according to independent testers AV-Comparatives and AV-Test.

Remains out of sight: The antivirus suite stays mostly out of your way during daily use, with minor notifications here and there to alert you of suspicious activity. Game mode temporarily turns of all notifications so you can play without interruption.

Lower real-world performance: AV-Comparatives’ preliminary tests found that Lavasoft’s protection rate has recently slipped in ranking. Due to its nonproprietary detection engine, Ad-Aware is always a little behind on the latest exploits.

Requires additional activation: Ad-Aware will work for the first 30 days but then requires activation via email. It’s an extra step and the minor cost for using a free product.

Bottom Line

With a slim interface built on top of a powerful scanner, Ad-Aware Free Antivirus+ provides robust protection with minimal system impact. The extra activation step is annoying, but for such great free protection, it is a small price to pay. While the suite can leave your system vulnerable to first-day exploits, they are rare, and Ad-Aware is more than capable to protect you in daily usage.

Get More Done

Making moving easier for millions of Americans involves what feels like millions of tasks. So we needed a tool that helped us move quickly, not one that required additional overhead. From design projects to client customizations to new employee onboarding, Redbooth keeps our entire team organized, in alignment, and always on schedule.

I tried somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 or so different products before choosing Redbooth. It just clicked for us. We have it set up so that each client has a different workspace — we’re a distributed company, so this is where we collaborate on every website we build. Having Redbooth certainly saves me at least an hour or two every day. And my time’s billable, just like everybody else’s. It would definitely end up being quite a hefty sum at the end of the month.
