PhotoScape for Windows Free Photo Editor Review

Free photo editing software

On first glance, I thought PhotoScape was going to be a dud, but I dug in deeper and realized why so many readers of this site have recommended it as a favorite free photo editor. It is jam-packed with features while remaining very easy to use. PhotoScape includes several modules, which I ll briefly describe here.

Note: Be careful of any sponsored links (ads) on this page advertising PhotoScape. There are many imposter download sites which can install malware and adware on your computer and/or try to charge a fee to download. The download is safe and free when you use the Publisher s Site link below or go directly to photoscape.org.

The Viewer

The viewer is nothing special, but it does the job. It gives you standard thumbnail view, along with a folders list along the side, and a larger preview window, plus a few functions for rotating images, viewing EXIF data and so on. The maximum thumbnail size is pretty small, and there does not seem to be any sorting options. Each of the other tabs in PhotoScape has its own thumbnail browser as well so you probably won t use this tab often.

The Editor

The editor is where most of the functions are. Here you can apply a multitude of adjustments and effects to your photos. There is everything from one click auto-levels and contrast to advanced color curves, complete with the ability to load and save presets. There are many color and tone adjustments and a number of filter effects from the practical (noise reduction) to fun (cartoon). You can also spruce up your photos with a variety of fun and funky frames.

Within the editor, there is an object tab where you can add text, shapes, and speech balloons on top of the photo you are working with. There is a wide variety of clip art objects that can be stamped onto your working file, and you can also add any other photo or an image from the clipboard. There is a rich text tool for adding formatted text as well as a symbol tool which lets you browse all the symbol fonts on your computer and drop them onto your image.

Once these objects are in your document, they can be resized, moved, and rotated.

The editor also offers a flexible crop tool with a circular crop option. And there are a few region editing tools–red eye remover, mole remover, and mosaic. The red eye and mole tools could be improved, but for quick touch-ups, they do an okay job.

You also get undo and undo all buttons for reverting any changes you don t like. And when you save your edits, you have the option to back up the original photo before overwriting, save under a new file name, or save your file in a designated output folder.

Batch Processing

In the Batch Editor, you can apply almost all the functions available in the editor to multiple files at once. That includes frames, objects, text, color and tone adjustments, sharpening, resizing, and many of the effects. You can review the results before exporting one or all of the photos with your changes. You can also save your batch editor settings as a configuration file to re-use later.

Page Layouts

The page module is a multi-photo layout tool with over 100 choices of grid layouts to chose from. Simply drag and drop your photos into the boxes to create a quick collage. Individual photos can be moved and scaled to fit the grid boxes, and you can adjust the size of the layout, add margins, round the corners, and apply frames or filter effects to all photos in the layout.

Once your layout is complete, it can be saved as a new file or passed to the editor.

Other Features

Other modules include:

  • Combine: join multiple photos into a horizontal or vertical strip or grid.
  • AniGif: create a frame-based animation from multiple photos.
  • Print: print picture package layouts or thumbnail contact sheets.
  • Splitter: cut your photo into multiple images based on a grid.
  • Screen Capture: take an image of your full desktop, a window, or a region of your screen.
  • Color Picker: sample colors from anywhere on your screen.
  • Raw Converter: a simple converter for saving camera RAW files as JPEGs.
  • Rename: batch edit file names with custom text, date, time, serial numbers.

Conclusion

I m very impressed overall at what has been packed into this photo editor without sacrificing ease of use. It does have a few shortcomings, however.

In a few places I noticed Korean characters in some dialog boxes, and sometimes the language was not very clear in describing the functions. The program is also limited to working with only one document at a time, so if you want to change the photo you are working on, you will need to save and close the current file. It also means you can t do more advanced editing such as a photo montage of multiple images fading into each other. Although there are a few pixel-level editing tools here, they are fairly limited. That said, it will accommodate most of what the average person will want to do with photos, and offers quite a few fun extras as well.

PhotoScape is free for non-commercial use and runs on Windows 98/Me/NT/2000/XP/Vista. The program did not trigger any ad-ware or spyware warnings on my system, but the website and online help do display text ads. The online help contains several videos to demonstrate the program features. This is one of the better free photo editors out there, and it s well worth checking out.

Technically, Picasa does not meet my criteria for a photo editor because it does not allow you to do pixel-level editing. However, I have received so many reader suggestions for Picasa, that I am including it here as an honorary mention. Although it does have some basic editing functions, it is primarily photo organizing software, and as such it is listed in my Top Digital Photo Software for Family Photos list. More

    Best Photo Editing Software

How to Choose Photo Editing Software

We initially tested nine photo editing programs for over 80 hours to determine which software was the most intuitive and offered the best editing capabilities. Corel PaintShop Pro was the best photo editor in our review. It allows for quick and easy edits with high-end results. With a multitude of instructional videos and tutorials to guide you along, it allows users of any skill level to quickly learn the toolbars and menus within the program. With easy organizing, sharing, importing, exporting, and help and support, Corel is the frontrunner in image editors. It delivers excellent value and is fun to use.

Affinity Photo is perfect for more advanced photo editors looking for an inexpensive program without a subscription. This software supports high resolution files, including RAW and PSD. The interface is designed like most advanced photo editing software, which will help experienced editors transition to using it, but it also includes minor changes to the interface that simplify the editing process. Unfortunately, it does not come with a photo organizer, which is the only reason this image editor ranks so low in our comparison. However, you can always purchase photo organizing software in addition to Affinity Photo.

CyberLink s PhotoDirector is a great program for beginners since it features many basic and advanced tools. The program is also organized in an easy way for beginners to find, learn about and use tools. There are also dozens of online tutorials to help you make the perfect special effects. This program isn t compatible with PSD files, which allow you to save the separate files of your projects. It also doesn t have any vector graphics tools.

How We Tested, What We Found

In order to find the best photo editing software, we consulted with professional wedding photographer Lisa Stewart as well as John Yoo, CyberLink s Director of Sales, to see what they look for in photo editing software. Additionally, we used Amazon reviews to find highly rated programs.

In our testing, we used the same set of images and edited them on each of the programs. Our testers were skilled editors with backgrounds in photography and graphic design. We evaluated how easy it was to resize, crop and adjust the color of an image. How quickly the software applied the edits and how the changes affected image quality were also very important. We then calculated a score that reflects how easy the software is to use. While we initially started testing nine programs, only seven were good enough to make the final cut.

What Else Is Important in Selecting Photo Editing Software?

Lisa Stewart, professional wedding photographer, says that one of the most important features of photo editing software is the ability to make presets: If you do the same type of edit often, you can push one button rather than go through every step, every time. This is especially helpful if you are planning to edit large quantities of photos on a regular basis.

The key to understanding any photo editing software comes from using the available tutorials and help options. It s important that you find manufacturers offering technical support, including email, live chat and phone assistance along with FAQs and tutorial videos.

Beginners and intermediate users wanting to improve should look for simple programs that allow them to work in layers. Programs like Zoner Photo Studio are organized into different sections to help you find the tools and features you need without getting overwhelmed with options. This program also has plenty of help tools to assist you in learning both simple and advanced editing tricks.

Photography editing software typically comes with a one-user license with purchase, although several programs offer multiple licensing for businesses. Other manufacturers offer pay-as-you-go pricing, with a monthly fee for a cloud-based solution. However, unless you plan on using your software on a daily basis and on a professional level, a single-payment option should fit your needs.

Support Documentation: Essential Information When Learning a New Program

Support is essential, especially when you re floundering trying to understand a specific feature or task. Many image editing companies offer a support forum where users can interact with each other and ask questions, often getting multiple responses in a short amount of time.

Good tech support is also essential, especially if you re just getting started with a new program. Some popular technical support options include live chat, phone support and email. Many programs also have user manuals, text and video tutorials, and a FAQs section to further assist you. It s important to ensure the photo editing software you choose has the support and documentation necessary to suit your skill level and needs.

Photo Editing Software: What Programs Work for Whom

The type of program that works best for you depends on your individual needs. Some programs are created for growth, designed for beginners through advanced levels, while others are strictly beginner or advanced. Whether you are a beginner or a pro, there is a photo editing program that caters to your creative needs.

Most programs are compatible with PCs running Windows, with some also available for Macs. However, it s important to carefully check the specifications and system requirements of the program you choose to ensure it is compatible with your setup. Most programs require or highly recommend anywhere between 128MB to 4GB of available hard disk space and 100MB to 4GB of RAM for installation and use. If you don t have enough space, or it s too close to your capacity, the program won t run properly and you won t be able to take advantage of its features.

What Is the Best Photo Editing Software for Beginners?

When you re just starting out, a basic photo editor that is easy to use is ideal. Learning the foundational skills in editing prepares you for using more advanced software in the future. Some programs are designed specifically for a certain skill level, while others accommodate a range of skill levels.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018 has powerful editing tools that are designed for users of all skill levels. With three editing modes, including Quick Edit, Guided and Expert, the program adapts to your skill level. Photoshop Elements lets you upload your photos directly to the social media site of your choice, including Facebook, Flickr and Twitter. This intuitive photo editor grows as you do and is an ideal option for beginner photo editors who want to quickly advance their skill set.

What Are the Best Advanced Photo Editors?

Advanced users and professional photographers need professional image editing software that offers efficient workflow and delivers professional, high-quality results. Advanced programs have a steeper learning curve for the novice, yet they deliver the best results once you master the application.

Affinity Photo is one of the best programs for more advanced users. It not only offers cutting-edge tools, but it also creates them at a professional level. Be aware that this program does not come with photo organizing software. Corel PaintShop Pro is another great option for experienced editors as it gives you access to HDR tools, several filters and plenty of adjustment layer tools to work with.

Adobe offers the most advanced photo editing tools with programs such as Photoshop and Lightroom. Another powerful professional photo editor is Phase One s Capture One Pro 10, which, although initially expensive, doesn t require a subscription. These programs give you more control when editing color, brightness and image resolution. The effects you can make with these programs are truly stunning. To learn more, head to our professional photo editing software review.

Photo Editing Software: Wrapping It Up

With hundreds of options to choose from, picking an image editing program can be a difficult decision. There are free programs, web-based programs and software you install on your computer. Some programs are subscription based, while others are one-time install purchases. Whether you are a novice photographer or a professional, there is a photo editor designed to suit your skill level and needs.

Considerations to take into account include how much editing you plan to do, the types of tools you need, file formats you might work with and your skill level. You also need to take a look at your computer system and ensure it has the technical specifications to run a photo editing program, as some require a lot of RAM and hard drive space for operation. Or you may want to consider a cloud-based program that runs on a month-to-month subscription with immediate access to program updates.

Top 5 Free Video Editing Software Programs

There are many free video editing software programs available for download today, but not all of them are good.

Many programs simply don’t do what the manufacturers say that they will do, and others don’t provide enough – or any support.

Of course, most free software does not include the same level or quality of support that you would expect to find with software that you purchase commercially. While it is true that you get what you pay for, there really are some good free video editing software available out there.

Here are the top five that we have found:

    Free video editing software

Already installed on newer computers that are running Windows XP, Movie Maker has drag and drop features to make creating and editing your movie easier. Microsoft has many add-ons for this software, and upgrades are available through the website. This is one of the best free video editing software programs available.

    Free video editing software

Apple iMovie is comparable to Windows Movie Maker, but Apple iMovie is used on the Mac operating system. Apple iMovie has many advanced features and add-ons. Unfortunately, the software is only free if you buy a new Mac system. If you want the software without buying the system, it is available for purchase separately. One of the best free video editing programs available for Mac users.

    Free video editing software

Avid FreeDV is available for both Windows and Mac operating systems, and includes basic video and audio editing capabilities, as well as up to two streams of real-time effects. On the whole, a solid video editing program that is slightly hard to use, but very powerful once you learn its ins and outs.

    Free video editing software

Wax is a high performance and flexible free video editing software program. It started out as a college project, and has since grown. Wax is good for both home users and professionals. It can be used as a stand-alone application, or as a plug-in to other video editors. The software also features unlimited video and audio tracks with top-down compositing.

    Free video editing software

Zwei-Stein is great free video editing software, but the user interface is very technical. It is full featured, offering many different effects. It can edit up to 256 video, audio, and still image clips. There are up to 64 effects, which can be chained serially. An interesting program that’s worth looking at.

    Conclusion

Microsoft Movie Maker for Windows users, and Apple iMovie for Mac users are probably the two easiest to use free video editing software programs available. Both products will allow you to very quickly perform simple video editing tasks.

However, if you want to able to add more interesting effects and transitions to your videos, you might want to check out commercial video editing software. These programs provide very intuitive user interfaces to complete basic editing tasks, but are also complex enough to let you experiment with advanced video effects.

    Edit Digital Videos With Ease

    Free video editing software

If you’ve been looking for a good video editing program, you may want to check out Corel VideoStudio Pro. This software allows you to quickly create and share a movie using built-in templates, special effects, titles and transitions. You can apply unique effects such as stop-motion animation, time-lapse and chroma key to create brilliant digital videos.

VSDC Free Video Editor – Free download and software reviews – CNET, free video editing

Free video editing softwareVSDC Free Video Editor

Clicking on the Download Now (Visit Site) button above will open a connection to a third-party site. Download.com cannot completely ensure the security of the software hosted on third-party sites.

VSDC Free Video Editor looks and feels just like a professional video editor. In fact, if feels almost identical to Final Cut Pro in a lot of ways. If you want to experience that style of in-depth video editing, this program is an epic way to do it for free. Be warned, though, that there’s a steep learning curve unless you already have some experience.

This program checks in at about 26MB, which isn’t gigantic, but is still relatively large. For that, you’ll get a program that is a dead ringer for professional editing programs. It has the same sort of timeline editing style that lets you combine multiple cuts, add transitions, and render them into a complete project. As such, it isn’t very easy to use unless you really know what you’re doing. Few things are labeled or intuitive, and all of your tools are spread out across multiple menus. If you can find the features, there are plenty of ways to cut, reshape, and modify your video’s picture and audio, though. You can even kick the quality up to 30 FPS and 1080p HD. VSDC Free Video Editor supports just about every video format you can think of, so you’ll have no problem turning any video into a project.

This video editor gives you tons of control and editing power, but you’ll have to know how to use it. The program could use a manual to help novice users comb through all of the features. Without that, VSDC Free Video Editor will take a lot of experimenting or previous editing know-how to figure out. It’s worth spending plenty of time with, though.

    Publisher’s Description

When it comes to video editing nobody wants to spend hours mastering nuances of video cutting techniques. All we usually need is to place several pieces together, add some fade-ins and outs, include subtitles and do this with as little efforts as possible. At the same time nobody wants to compromise with the final quality of the video. Indeed, simple not necessarily should mean primitive. VSDC Free Video Editor is a simple and easy to use video editor featuring a lot of functions even a pro editor wouldn’t be ashamed of.

With a full support for dozens of video codecs and formats including but not limiting to AVI, MP4, MKV, MPG, WMV, 3GP, FLV for video; MP3, WAV, WMA, FLAC, PCM, OGG, AAC, M4A, AMR for audio; and BMP, JPG, PNG, PSD, ICO, TIFF for images, VSDC Free Video Editor provides one of the easiest ways to combine multiple source chunks in different formats into a resulting high-quality video. A bunch of filters can turn even a commonplace video sequence into a classy pro-quality movie, while thousands of video and audio effects conveniently grouped into four categories help you making your video to look and sound more dynamic. Not only does VSDC Free Video Editor offer powerful video editing capabilities, it is also surprisingly easy to use. Forget video conversion back and forth between different formats. Import from any devices and cams, including GoPro and drones, is available. Currently it is the only free video editor that allows users to export in a new H.265/HEVC codec, something essential for those working with 4K and HD. New versions have also enabled an easy export to social networks: special profiles for YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. All multimedia processing done from one app: video editing capabilities reinforced by a video converter, a screen capture, a video capture, a disc burner and a YouTube uploader.

    6 Best Free Video Editors

Using a free video editing program is an easy and convenient way to edit your videos. Plus, most of them are so easy to use that they re great for beginners.

You might want a video editor if you need to extract audio from a video or add different audio, cut out parts of the video, add subtitles, build a DVD menu, merge video files together, or fade a video in or out.

Because most free video editors limit their features to advertise their professional versions, you may find roadblocks that stop you from doing more advanced edits. For editors with more features, but that aren t free, check out mid-level digital video software or these top professional video editing programs.

Note: If you need to convert your video files to different file formats like MP4, MKV, MOV, etc., this list of free video converters has some great options.

    Free video editing software

Editing videos with OpenShot is extraordinary when you see the list of its amazing features. You can download it absolutely free on not only Windows and Mac but also Linux.

A few of the supported features in this free editor includes desktop integration for drag-and-drop, image and audio support, curve-based Key Frame animations, unlimited tracks and layers, and 3D animated tiles and effects.

OpenShot is also good for clip resizing, scaling, trimming, snapping, and rotation, plus motion picture credit scrolling, frame stepping, time-mapping, audio mixing, and real-time previews.

The fact that you get all of this for free is reason enough to download it yourself and try it out before you purchase a video editor. More

Another video editing software program for Windows is VideoPad, from NCH Software. It s 100% free for non-commercial use.

It supports drag-and-drop, effects, transitions, 3D video editing, text and caption overlay, video stabilization, easy narration, free built-in sound effects, and color control.

VideoPad can also change the video speed, reverse the video, burn DVDs, import music, and export movies to YouTube (and other similar sites) and a variety of resolutions (like 2K and 4K). More

    Free video editing software

Freemake Video Converter functions mainly as a free video converter, which is why I ve added it to this list. However, its simple and easy-to-use editing features is what sets it apart from some of the more complex and confusing editors.

Being able to do some light editing to your videos is great when you can also use the same tool to convert the file to a variety of other formats, or even burn the files directly to a disc.

Some of the video editing features of this program includes adding subtitles, clipping out sections you don t want in the video, removing or adding audio, and merging/joining videos together.

    Free video editing software

VSDC is a full-featured free video editing tool that you can install on Windows. A fair warning though: this program might be a little hard to use for beginners because of the sheer number of features and menus.

However, if you poke around for while and play with your videos within the editor, you ll find that it s not quite as daunting as it was when you first opened it.

There s even a wizard you can run to make things easier. Some of things you can do is add lines, text, and shapes, as well as charts, animations, images, audio, and subtitles. Plus, as any good video editor should, VSDC can export videos to a variety of file formats.

The VSDC Video Editor setup also lets you easily install their video capture program and screen recorder. These are of course optional but they may come in handy in certain projects. More

iMovie is completely free for macOS. It offers many options for editing video and audio plus adding photos, music, and narration to your videos.

One of my favorite features of iMovie is its ability to make 4K-resolution movies, and you can even start doing so from your iPhone or iPad and then finish it on your Mac. That s pretty cool! More

    Free video editing software

Movie Maker was Window s free video editing software that comes pre-installed on a number of versions of Windows. You can use it to create and share high-quality movies.

I include it here in this list because it s already on lots of Windows computers, which means you might not even need to download anything in order to start using it.

Although it was discontinued at the start of 2017, you can still download it through non-Microsoft websites. See our review of Windows Movie Maker for more information on what you can do with it. More

The best free video editor 2017: the best video editing tools around

    Free video editing software

Some of the best video editing tools are yours to download and use completely free. Whether you’re an experienced home videographer or making your first foray into filmmaking, there’s a free video editor that will provide everything you need.

If you just want to cut a clip to size or add a new soundtrack, there are lightweight editors that will help you get the job done in seconds, and export the video in a format suitable for uploading online, or playing on any desktop or mobile device.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for more advanced tools like chroma keying and color grading, there are also advanced programs that offer everything you’d expect to find in premium software except the price tag.

However, not all videos editors are created equal. Some put strict limitations on the length of your finished products, offer a very small selection of editing tools, or apply a watermark when you export your work. Here we’ve rounded up only the software that delivers on its promises, making video editing easy and fun.

    Free video editing software

    Free video editing software

    1. Lightworks

Puts professional quality tools within the reach of everyone regardless of budget. The best free video editor available

Lightworks is far much more than a simple tool for cutting clips the pro version has been used to create big-name movies including The King’s Speech and Road to Perdition.

    Free video editing software

As you would expect for such a powerful video editor, you won’t be able to master it overnight, but that’s certainly not something you could hold against it.

Lightworks is described as the professional video editor for everyone, and we reckon that’s a fair summary. Despite its power, it will run well on fairly modest hardware, and it handles video capture and advanced editing with aplomb.

If you’ve tried other free video editors you’ll probably find that the interface is a little different to anything you’re used to, but you can arrange the various controls and windows to create something that suits your way of working.

The free license has everything you need to make amazing videos, but TechRadar readers can also get 40% off a monthly Lightworks Pro license using the special discount code TECHRADAR_LW_PRO_MONTH_2017. Lightworks Pro adds the ability to export in formats other than MPEG, publish 4K video directly to YouTube, and export 3D videos. Find out how to use your discount voucher.

    2. Shotcut

It might look unusual, but master it and you’ll reap the benefits

Shotcut is another professional-feeling free video editor that requires a little patience if you are achieve the results it is so capable of delivering. The slightly unusual interface can be put down to the fact that this started life as a Linux application, and little has changed in its conversion to Windows.

To start with, the interface may seem a little stark. You will need to not only load a video, but also choose which editing mode you would like to work in and which tools you’d like to use.

There’s no getting away from the fact that Shotcut has a steep learning curve. It’s possible to achieve some impressive results by simply applying one of its many filters to your video, but the real rewards will only be reaped by those willing to invest the time and energy in fully getting to grips with what’s on offer.

    3. Hitfilm Express

A powerful free video editor that’s expandable if you outgrow it

Hitfilm Express is another video editor that promises pro-level features for free and it delivers. The basic editor is very impressive, with advanced cutting tools, a great set of audio and video filters, layers and masking, compositing options, and chroma keying for creating green screen effects.

Additional tools are available for a fee, starting at 8.85 (about US$10, AU$15) for a pack featuring color-correction, exposure adjustment, split screen masking, and various creative filters.

The downside of all this power is that Hitfilm Express is much more demanding than either Lightworks or Shotcut, which is the main reason it’s dropped to third place. Make sure you check the technical requirements before downloading it to avoid disappointment.

    4. VSDC Free Video Editor

A non-linear editor stacked with tools, with more added all the time

VSDC Free Video Editor provides a huge array of effects and filters to enhance your footage, with both wizards and manual options to suit beginners or more advanced users.

VSDC is highly capable, and can yield superb results. As a non-linear editor, it works in rather a different way to many other similar tools, letting you position clips and other elements on the timeline wherever you like and edit them there.

With the ability to not only work with multiple scenes and transitions, but also to add sprites and text to videos, you can create a professional-quality movie if you’re willing to stick with VSDC’s slightly odd way of working and unusual interface.

The latest version of VSDC adds extra artistic effects, including smoke. There’s also a dedicated Instagram export profile and automatic image stabilization. It’s noticeably faster, too. An excellent choice for creative video projects.

    5. Avidemux

An accessible free video editor for small editing tasks like cutting

One thing to understand about Avidemux from the outset is that it is not going to help you create the next Star Wars or to become a master movie producer. Rather, it’s a set of essential tools for everyday video editing, covering all of the basics such as converting formats, trimming footage, appending one clip to another, and applying filters and effects.

While Avidemux isn’t offer the most powerful free video editor, it’s not a pared-back Windows Movie Maker style affair either. You might have to go hunting for some of the more advanced options, but spend a little time perusing the menus and you’ll be impressed.

There’s also a handy quickstart guide to get you rolling if you’re totally new to video editing. If you can’t see a tool you need, Avidemux is also expandable via plugins that add features like subtitles and watermarks.
