A Definitive Therapy for Ingrown Hairs or Razor Bumps

INGROWN HAIRS (also called razor bumps) are unsightly and painful. They result when the shaved hair gets trapped inside the follicle or grows back into the skin. It can cause scarring, redness and swelling (its medical term is Pseudofolliculitis Barbae or PFB).

We have developed this comprehensive approach that will solve the most stubborn conditions or occasional ingrown hairs. You will need to follow all the steps in this regimen for several weeks.

• There are several products that claim to help treat ingrown hairs, but the reality is that Salicylic acid is the one active substance that can visibly improve razor bumps. It is a dermatological-grade ingredient that exfoliates, moisturizes, clears pores and can help prevent infection. Use a post-shave product with salicylic acid so it remains on your skin the whole day (see below).

• Use only a non-acnegenic shaving cream specially formulated for sensitive skin, with lots of lubricating agents (foam-based shaving creams can dry and irritate your skin).

• Do not use any product that has alcohol, it will seriously worsen ingrown hairs by drying the skin and closing the pores.

2. Improve your skin’s surface

• Exfoliating (removing the upper layers of dead skin) is indispensable to manage ingrown hairs. Daily use of a gentle face scrub with glycolic and salicylic acid is particularly effective.

Use a soft-bristle face brush and liquid cleanser in a circular motion on your beard to dislodge the tips of ingrown hairs, eliminate dead skin cells and clear follicles to allow hairs to surface unimpeded.

3. Adjust your shaving technique

• We hate to be the ones to tell you this, but shaving too closely is one of the triggers for razor bumps. Hair stubs cut too closely will get trapped inside the hair follicle and dig inward or sideways. Don’t worry, the disappearance of unsightly ingrown hairs will more than make up for the “five-o’clock shadow” appearance.

• To avoid shaving too close, don’t pull the skin when you shave; don’t put too much pressure on the blades; shave with the grain and use a single-blade razor.

• You will need to maintain this approach over time, as one extra-close shave will be enough to cause a recurrence of ingrown hairs that will take weeks to heal.

4. Treat already ingrown hairs

• Carefully lift the ingrown end out with tweezers, but don’t pluck the hair out; this will only make the hair regrow deeper.

• Azulene and Allantoin will help reduce the redness and swelling.

Curriculum

Course Requirements

One must complete a total of 30 credits, as described below, with an overall average of 3.0, to earn a Master of Science in Computer Engineering degree at the School of Engineering. In addition, an average of 3.0 is also required among all regular courses, not counting independent studies including thesis, projects and reading courses. At least 15 out of 30 credits should be graduate ECE credits (courses with EL-prefix). Remaining course can be either EL or CS prefixed courses.

Core Courses (6 credits)

The core courses cover fundamental material and should be taken as early as possible. An advanced course subsequent to a core course may be taken in lieu of the core course, upon approval by the program advisor. All students must choose two out of the following core courses:

3 Credits Computer Architecture I CS-GY 6133 This course provides students with an understanding of computer-hardware subsystems, digital design strategies and fundamental computer-performance and capacity-improvement techniques. Combinational and sequential circuits are developed for the essential building blocks of computers. Binary number systems are presented in both human and computer algorithms. A uniprocessor computer is built from the blocks developed. An assembly language and an instruction set are presented. Processor implementation with a data path and hardwired and microprogrammed control is introduced. Performance evaluation of computers is studied. Basic pipelining is introduced to improve system performance. Memory-hierarchy alternatives are introduced to improve the capacity of the computing system.

Prerequisite: Graduate standing. *Online version available. 3 Credits Advanced Hardware Design EL-GY 6463 This course shows how a hardware-description language (for example, VHDL) can be used for computer hardware modeling, logic synthesis, register-level synthesis and simulation. The resulting design with hundreds or thousands of gates is then ready to be downloaded to form FPGA chips or silicon cells. Programs used: QuickVHDL, modeling and simulation tools from Mentor Graphics or similar large-scale programs. A design project is required and students make a written and oral presentation.

Prerequisite: Graduate status. 3 Credits Fundamentals of Solid-State Electronic Devices EL-GY 6513 Introduction to semiconductor materials, energy band structures, and carrier transport; p-n junctions and Schottky barriers; heterostructures; bipolar and field-effect transistors; and introduction/survey of some electronic/optoelectronic devices that utilizes above device concepts.

Prerequisites: Graduate Standing or Undergraduate Standing with 3.0 GPA or higher and completion of MA-UY 2034 and PH-UY 2023. 3 Credits Introduction to Vlsi System Design EL-GY 6473 This course covers CMOS processing technology, MOS transistor theory, static/dynamic circuit and logic design techniques, circuit performance estimation, standard cells and gate arrays, clocking strategies, input/output structures, datapath, memory and control logic design. Advanced VLSI CAD tools are used for schematic capture, layout, timing analysis and simulations for functionality and performance.

Prerequisite: Senior or Graduate status, CS-UY 2204 EE-UY 3114 or equivalent. 3 Credits Nanoelectronic Devices EL-GY 6523 Introduction to quantum mechanics (Schroedinger s equation); energy-band diagrams in semiconductors, quantum effects in MOS transistors; analytical description of ultra-thin body (UTB) MOSFETs, FinFETs and tunnel FETs; introduction to mesoscopic transport; MIT virtual source model; novel channel materials for transistors (InGaAs, graphene, carbon nanotubes), alternate state variable devices (design in sub-nanometer nodes, spintronics).

Prerequisites: Graduate Standing or undergraduate students must have 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher.

Electives (21 credits)

Other graduate ECE and CSE courses (courses with EL and CS prefixes) can be found on the electives page. At least 15 out of 30 credits should be graduate ECE credits (EL numbered courses). Up to two graduate courses can be taken from other science, engineering, or management departments at NYU. The total number of credits for 5000-level EL courses and non-EL/CS courses cannot exceed 12 credits. Note that credits from 5000-level courses from other departments cannot be counted towards MS/EE degree, except with approval by the program director.

Note about CS-GY 6843 Computer Networking: We expect most students have covered this material in an undergraduate course. Therefore students can only take this course in exceptional cases and only if approved by Professor Yong Liu.

Project Requirements (3 credits)

One 3-credit advanced project in ECE/CSE (EL-GY 9953 or CS-GY 9963) is required.Certain courses with significant project component may be used to partially satisfy the project requirement, subject to approval by the program director.

3 Credits Advanced Project I EL-GY 9953 This course requires a student to conduct a theoretical and/or experimental project in a research area in electrical and computer engineering. The project is chosen based on the student’s specialized interest and preparation and is guided by a faculty member who is expert in the chosen subject. Oral presentation or a written report is required at the adviser’s discretion. A student must secure a project adviser before registration.

Prerequisite: Degree status. 3 Credits Advanced Project in Computer Science CS-GY 9963 This course permits the student to perform research in computer science with a narrower scope than a master’s thesis. Acceptance of a student by a faculty adviser is required before registration. A project report and an oral examination on it are required.

Prerequisite: Graduate status.

MS Thesis Option: (6 credits)

A thesis in ECE/CSE (EL-GY 997X/CS-GY 997X) may be selected to replace the 3-credit Advanced Project and a course from the elective group above.

MS Thesis in Electrical & Computer Engineering Department EL-GY 997X The student is required to conduct a theoretical and/or experimental project in a research area in electrical engineering, computer engineering, electrophysics, system engineering, or telecommunication networks. The project is chosen based on the student’s specialized interest and preparation and is guided by a faculty member who is expert in the chosen subject. Oral-thesis defense and formal, bounded thesis are required. Registration of at least 6 credits over continuous semesters is required. A student must secure a thesis adviser before registration.

Prerequisite: Degree status. MS Thesis in Computer Science CS-GY 997X Exceptional students may elect to write a master’s thesis for which no more than 6 credits may be earned toward the degree. Such research should demonstrate adequately the student’s proficiency in the subject material. Also required: oral thesis defense before at least three professors, plus a formal, bound thesis volume. Thesis registration must be continuous.

Prerequisites: Graduate status and satisfactory grades in prescribed courses.

Cons Still doesn t sound as mellifluous as the old naturally aspirated version

Value for money Porsche isn t the most profitable car company in the business because it offers value

What would I change? Other than a return to previous fuel economy rating systems so that we could have kept the naturally-aspirated six, not much

How I would spec it? Considering the price of Porsche options, I’d tell you to get the base model, but then you’d miss the 14-way adjustable seats and have to make do with a really crappy audio system. And, seriously, $3,660 for a transmission, even if it is a slick-shifting PDK? See Value for Money above

Among the many accomplishments — and there truly have been many — that Porsche AG can boast, none should be more lauded than the finesse they have brought to what is, after all, a back-asswards design. For, let us make no mistake about this, if you were designing a sports car, especially one that would eventually end up trying to circumnavigate the most treacherous racetracks at great rates of speed, the last layout you’d ponder would be one in which the motor is in the rear, hanging somewhere over the rear axle.

Local Pricing Incentives

The design’s crimes are manifold. For one thing, the weight distribution is all wrong, there being way too much avoirdupois burdening the rear tires and not nearly enough the fronts. And then there’s something called the polar moment of inertia, a distinctly complicated engineering term that basically means that when something is difficult to spin, the troublesome corollary is that once said spin has started, it can be disastrously difficult to stop.

Of course, owners of the Porsche 911, especially early generations of the fearsome Turbo, already know this. Many are the rear quarter panels crumpled by a 911 owner suddenly realizing that Ferdinand Porsche’s romantic notion of weight distribution could foster some hefty repair bills.

What s most amazing about the modern 911 is how completely such wayward behaviour has been eradicated from its persona. Indeed, the one overwhelming sensation one is left with after driving a 2017 Porsche 911 Carrera S — in my case, a Cab — is, as I mentioned, finesse. Everything — from the newly turbocharged range of six-cylinder engines to the sheer delicacy of its steering — is more refined than any four-wheeler that can remotely claim to be super. So polished is a modern Porsche that, save for its blinding acceleration and stomach-churning cornering forces, a 2017 Carrera S could have been manufactured by Lexus and no one would be the wiser.

That refinement, if you’ve ever bothered to read Porsche forums, has raised a few hackles. A Porsche should be at least a little brutal, goes the common refrain. All this sophistication smacks of rampant corporatism say the purists, as if Porsche should deliberately engineer in some frailties so that its owners — or, at least, that portion of them with small pee-pees — could find their missing id behind the wheel.

That said, Porsche does face a challenge in making its new range of turbocharged engines as involving as the previous, normally-aspirated sixes. Like almost every other automaker reacting to ever tightening fuel economy and emissions regulations, Porsche has downsized the S’s Boxer six from 3.8 litres to 3.0, and then added two turbochargers to compensate.

A quick look at the spec chart would seem to indicate a win-win situation. Maximum horsepower is up 20 — 420 horsepower for the new turbo’ed 3.0L versus 400 flat for the outgoing naturally-aspirated 3.8L — as is maximum torque at 368 lb.-ft. And, thanks to those twin turbochargers, all that torque arrives at 1,700 rpm, the owner of a 2015 911, in contrast, having to wait until 5,600 for its maximum grunt.

Indeed, the first impression of the new Carrera S is of a huge swell of low-end torque as soon as you touch the throttle, no more waiting — thousand one, thousand two — for the crank to spin up to four grand before the acceleration matches the snarl. Instead, as soon as you touch the throttle, there’s a great swell of torque as two turbochargers force-feed the new, shorter stroke version of Porsche’s classic Boxer six.

Nor is there any of the lumpy throttle response common to lesser turbocharged engines, Porsche’s long history of turbocharging allowing it to (sort of) replicate the linear throttle response of a naturally aspirated engine. If you must turbocharge an engine, leaving it to the masters at Porsche is a good idea. Purists looking to castigate the new engine simply on its performance are going to have to dance around the reality that the new turbocharged sixes are pretty darn good engines.

That said, the noise emanating from the four tailpipes isn’t quite as symphonic as before. Porsche has all manner of tricks up its sleeve — resonators, attenuators, etc. — but there’s no way to make any engine with a turbocharger or two stuffed up its exhaust pipe rip and snort like a big, high-revving six. Porsche’s sound engineers did a masterful job of choreographing the new engine’s six pistons and twin turbochargers for maximum melody and there are times — like when you’re hard on the gas at four grand — that the difference isn t glaringly obvious. If not quite ripping silk, then at least some high thread count cotton is being torn asunder.

Nonetheless, it s always apparent that you’re now dealing with the Stone Temple Pilots and not the Rolling Stones. Oh, Porsche designs in a little rorty blat when you fire up the little beast. And, like I said, there are times when it sounds like the real deal. But just when you are expecting the big crescendo when the rev counter passes 5,500 rpm, the whole thing falls a little flat. Indeed, the whole party is over by 6,500 rpm, 1,000 short of redline. Think Bohemian Rhapsody without the Scaramouche, Galileo, Bismillah operatic interlude: It’s still a great song, but Wayne and friends aren t beating their heads against the dashboard of a Gremlin for what’s left.

The rest of the car is virtually the same, Porsche’s internal 991.2 designation reflecting the modest changes. Oh, there are the standard Porsche front and rear fascia tweaks with new head- and taillights as well as bumpers and the handling is even more precise thanks to a GT3-inspired rear-wheel steering system. Nonetheless, plug in all the standard superlatives — incredible sophistication, precise steering and Lexus-like (for a supercar) dependability — as well as the traditional vices — pricey entry point, even more ridiculous option list — and the new(ish) 911 is pretty much the same as the old, save for the aforementioned engine.

The navigation system is intuitive, the seats comfortable and the ride — unlike, say, the Ferrari California which is supposed to be equally “accessible” — comfy cozy. Between the front trunk and rear “seats” — no human ever really travels back there — there’s adequate cargo carrying space. And, a Porsche is the one super-ish coupe that you could, without checking in with your mechanic, take off on a two-week adventure with some expectation of returning without the aid of a tow truck.

So, the bottom line in all of this is: a) whether exhaust music matters all that much to you, and b) if it does, does it matter enough for you to switch to a brand with less of the aforementioned qualities? And, oh by the way, the alternative (I’m thinking Ferrari here) is probably turbocharging all its engines as well. I, too, wish that turbocharging wasn’t the expedient solution that (almost) all super car manufacturers see as their regulatory salvation. But, complain all you want that the 911 is becoming too civilized, the fact is if you’re shopping for a sophisticated supercar, especially one boasting Teutonic dependability, you don’t really have much choice.

And here’s one more little tidbit that might make purists more amenable to progress. The newly-turbocharged 420-horse 2017 Carrera S is but four horsepower shy of the last air-cooled 911 Turbo Porsche purists so venerate yet consumes just 9.7 litres of high test per 100 kilometres. That’s 29 miles per gallon in a car that can accelerate to 100 km/h in just 4.1 seconds. Pause for thought, non?
