10 free anti-malware tools worth checking out

The cost of anti-malware apps keeps rising. Luckily, there are effective tools you can use to prevent and remove infections without spending a dime.

By Brien Posey | in 10 Things, December 6, 2010, 3:43 AM PST

Over the last few years, anti-malware software has become increasingly costly. But believe it or not, there are still ways to protect your computer for free. In this article, I will list 10 free utilities you can use to either prevent malware infections or to help clean up the mess once a PC becomes infected.

Note: This article is also available as a PDF download.

1: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011

I have been using AVG’s free antivirus product for a few years now, and although it isn’t perfect, it seems to be at least as good as most of the commercial anti-malware products. AVG’s free edition provides basic protection against viruses and spyware, but the company also offers a more comprehensive security suite called AVG Internet Security 2011. This suite offers the same anti-malware protection as the free edition, but it also provides real-time protection against Internet search and social networking sites.

2: Comodo Antivirus

Comodo Antivirus takes a different approach to virus protection than most other antivirus products do. Comodo is based on the idea that it is foolish to allow code to run without first proving itself to be benign. So Comodo implements a default denial until an executable proves itself trustworthy. To keep the software from being too chatty, Comodo executes unknown code in an isolated sandbox where its behavior can be monitored without running the risk of the executable harming the system.

3: PC Tools AntiVirus Free 2011

PC Tools AntiVirus Free 2011 is a basic antivirus / anti-spyware program that is designed to protect Windows desktops against various forms of malware. Besides its basic detection capabilities, PC Tools includes a feature called Search Defender that is designed to warn you about unsafe Web sites (or phishing sites) before you click on them. The software also includes a File Guard component that monitors the file system and blocks attempted malware infections in real time.

4: Avast Free Antivirus

Like AVG, Avast sells comprehensive security suites, but makes its basic antivirus / anti-spyware product available for free to home users. Although I have never used Avast Free Antivirus, I’ve recently noticed posts in various message boards from people who claim that Avast provides better protection than some of the commercial products.

5: Ad-Aware Free Internet Security

Although it was originally designed as a product for detecting adware, Lavasoft’s Ad-Aware has evolved into a complete anti-malware product. Ad-Aware Free Internet Security provides real-time protection against spyware, rootkits, and more. It also includes a utility called The Neutralizer, which you can use to clean a PC that has already been infected.

6: HijackThis

HijackThis is one of my favorite anti-malware utilities, but it’s not for the faint of heart. HijackThis is designed to compile a report of critical file and registry settings that are often prone to viral infections. The thing that makes HijackThis difficult to use is that it makes no distinction between malicious and legitimate entries. As a result, you can end up doing even more damage to a PC unless you know what you are doing. Even so, I consider HijackThis to be a must-have utility.

7: Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft provides free antivirus protection for home users through a relatively new application called Microsoft Security Essentials. Microsoft Security Essentials is based on the same ForeFront technology as Microsoft’s enterprise class anti-malware software. The difference is that Microsoft Security Essentials is available solely to home users and businesses with fewer than 10 Windows desktops.

8: Windows Defender

Microsoft’s Windows Defender is a free anti-spyware utility for Windows. It’s not comprehensive, but it does a surprisingly good job of protecting Windows as long as you install it before an infection occurs.

Windows Defender is included with Windows Vista and Windows 7, but you can also download a version for Windows XP. If you are using Windows 7 or Windows Vista, Windows Defender is disabled by default. You can enable Windows Defender by typing the word Defender into the Windows search box and then double-clicking on the Windows Defender option. When you do, Windows will tell you that Windows Defender is turned off and will give you the opportunity to enable it.

9: Malicious Software Removal Tool

Although not a comprehensive antivirus tool by any stretch of the imagination, Microsoft’s Malicious Software Removal Tool does a good job of detecting and removing the most common viruses. The Malicious Software Removal Tool works with Windows 7, Vista, XP, and Server 2003. Microsoft releases updates to this tool on the second Tuesday of each month.

10: McAfee virus removal tools

McAfee makes commercial antivirus products, but it also offers some free tools for removing viruses. Specifically, it offers tools for removing Sasser, Bagle, Zafi, Mydoom, Lovsan / Balster, Klez, and Bugbear. You can download all of these tools here.

The best free malware removal tool 2017

Free malware removal

Keeping your antivirus software up to date will ensure your PC is protected from new viruses as soon as they emerge, but there are other malicious programs to be aware of. For example, adware and spyware don’t behave like viruses, and might escape detection.

That’s why you need a malware removal tool. Here we’ve picked out the programs we trust to protect our PCs from all kinds of threats both broad-spectrum security suites to replace your existing antivirus software, and smaller malware removal tools to supplement it. We’ve also looked at programs that will identify and eliminate malware infections on friends’ and relatives’ PCs essential if you’ve become the family tech support.

1. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

The most effective free malware remover, with deep scans and daily updates

If you suspect a malware infection, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware should be your first port of call. It s updated daily, so you can trust it to identify and remove new threats the minute they appear.

The first time you install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, you re given a 14-day trial of the premium edition, which includes preventative tools like real-time scanning and specific protection from ransomware. After two weeks, it reverts to the basic free version. This has to be activated manually, but is still a top-notch security tool. We recommend running it at least once a week to check or any nasties that you haven’t noticed, or if you notice that your web browser has suddenly started acting strangely (likely a result of adware).

Last year, Malwarebytes bought Adwcleaner, which as its name suggests targets and removes annoying programs that hijack your browser by changing your homepage, resetting your default search engine, or adding unwanted toolbars. It s also available free, and along with Anti-Malware, is a great addition to your security toolkit.

Bitdefender protects your PC from adware, trackers, and other forms of malware. If you’re considering totally overhauling your security suite, it comes highly recommended

2. Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition

Prevention is better than cure, and Bitdefender delivers both

If you re thinking about replacing your antivirus software, check out Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition. It has a dedicated anti-malware engine to help you avoid an infection in the first place, and mop up any existing problems.

One of BitDefender s best features is the ability to scan files or folders that look a bit suspicious by simply dragging and dropping them onto its home screen (it might be a good idea to do this with your Downloads folder if you ve noticed some funny business lately). Any unpleasantness detected by the malware removal engine will be swiftly quarantined, and can be disposed of at your leisure.

BitDefender is unobtrusive, but its Protection Shield will alert you to any malicious attempts to compromise your system. All in all, it s an excellent foundation for your anti-malware arsenal.

3. Adaware Antivirus Free

Adaware can replace your antivirus or work an anti-malware supplement

Adaware Antivirus Free is another great option if you re building an anti-malware toolkit from the ground up. It includes a virtual environment where suspicious programs can be analysed to see if they behave like malware (a technique known as heuristic analysis). This means you re always protected from new malware even if you re the very first person to be affected and the malicious program isn t yet in Adaware s database of known threats. The malware can then be safely contained and removed.

All this happens quietly in the background, and can be suspended temporarily if you want your processor s full power for a gaming session.

Adaware Antivirus Free can also scan downloads before you install them, helping prevent malware infestations in the first place by filtering their most common point of entry.

Best of all, if you’re just looking for a way to boost your existing antivirus software, Adaware’s installer lets you choose a version without real-time scanning that won’t conflict with other antivirus tools.

4. Emsisoft Emergency Kit

A portable app that s perfect if you ve become the family tech support

If you re called in to help a friend with a malware infestation, Emsisoft Emergency Kit is the tool for you. It s a portable app, so you can keep it handy on a USB stick, or your cloud storage service of choice (it s only 591MB, though it does generate log files, which will take up a little extra room).

Like any malware removal tool, Emsisoft Emergency Kit has a database of current threats, and the PC you re cleaning needs an internet connection so the software can check for updates.

Once it s updated itself, it scans the PC for threats and quarantines anything it finds to stop it doing further damage to your system. After a quick reboot, the files will be deleted.

5. SUPERAntiSpyware

All-round protection from malware that gives you full control over scans

The free edition of SUPERAntiSpyware detects all forms of malicious software including adware and spyware and removes every trace quickly and efficiently.

If you suspect that a particular file might contain malware, you can submit it to SUPERAntiSpyware s threat labs, where its behavior will be analyzed. It s not as fast or convenient as tools that scan files using a virtual machine, but is a good option if your system is low on resources.

You can also control which types of file are scanned, whether SUPERAntiSpyware should follow shortcuts, and whether it should check inside ZIP archives very handy if you ve downloaded a program in an archive and want to check it before extracting the contents.

Scans must be performed manually, but SUPERAntiSpyware s granular control makes it a great choice for more confident users.

3 Free Real-Time Malware Protection Removal Tools

Free malware removalMost people in the western world have access to flatrate Internet connections, cheap data plans for mobile devices, and free WiFi hotspots at almost every corner, allowing them to be online wherever they go. While these amenities are convenient, the freedom they provide comes bundled with an increased risk of catching malware. A digital infection with viruses, trojans, spyware, or other malware can put your data integrity and your system stability at risk and has the potential to cause further damage, including data and identity theft.

If you realize that your individual browsing and download habits put you at a high risk of catching malware, you should make an effort to be protected from these threats in real-time. An anti-virus tool is essential for PC security, but it is not sufficient. Experts recommend a layered protection by using multiple tools and real-time malware scanners are one important layer you shouldn t miss. You can pick from one of the three free malware removal programs I will introduce in this article.

ThreatFire

ThreatFire is a malware detection and removal tool that works in real-time and provides a defense against zero-day attacks, i.e. novel malware attacks for which no virus definitions or signatures have been released yet. It works in cooperation with your existing anti-virus software.

The setup is dead simple and fast! After a brief setup, ThreatFire checks your computer for existing firewall, anti-virus, and anti-spyware protection. In a final step it scans for threats.

Free malware removal

In my case, ThreatFire found that my setup was acceptable and no threats were detected. Installation and scan were completed in under 3 minutes and I was re-directed to a Quick Tutorial, explaining how the tool works. In this tutorial, ThreatFire addresses all common questions that you may have.

Ad-Aware

Ad-Aware is an anti-virus and anti-spyware tool that offers malware protection, live ad-watch, and real-time protection against threats. Like all tools in this list, Ad-Aware works in cooperation with your existing anti-virus software.

Compared to ThreatFire, the installation of Ad-Aware took considerably longer, mainly because Ad-Aware instantly started downloading and applying updates, which took several minutes.

Free malware removal

When the updates are completed, you are greeted by a screen that summarizes the current status for web update, system scan, and ad-watch. Via a button in the bottom left you can switch between simple and advanced mode. In advanced mode you can schedule scans and access other more complex settings.

Free malware removal

It is recommended to perform an initial full system scan. Later you can choose between a smart scan, which will check critical sections of your system only, or a full in-depth scan.

I also recommend to head to the Ad-Watch tab (top right) and turn on real-time protection for files, registry, and network as desired.

Free malware removal

Spyware Terminator

Spyware Terminator is a free spyware scanner and removal tool with real-time protection and an optional integrated anti-virus tool. Unlike its competitors, Spyware Terminator offers no paid alternative, meaning the entire suite, including personal use, commercial use, and software support, is completely free.

The tool installs via a standard installation process. Note that Spyware Terminator attempts to add a Net Security Toolbar during installation, which you can of course choose not to install. After the installation is completed, the setup assistant launches and you can define how you want to use the program. I selected the spyware protection without ClamAV and with advanced protection level. You can change these settings later via the Spyware Termination Center.

Free malware removal

The Spyware Terminator Center reveals the full complexity of this tool. Here you can adjust scan schedules and control further advanced settings.

Free malware removal

For a more in-depth review about Spyware Terminator, have a look at this article: Spyware Terminator Free Real-time Spyware Protection

Conclusion

ThreatFire offers a very easy and straight forward setup and is suitable for the average user. Experienced users will feel more comfortable with Ad-Aware or Spyware Terminator. Ad-Aware was one of the first tools to offer malware protection that went beyond simple virus scans. While it offers an easy setup and a clear interface, which is suitable for both inexperienced and advanced users, Spyware Terminator clearly beats Ad-Aware Free when it comes to advanced options and features.

Malware protection and removal tools are only one level of security. In addition, you should use a firewall and a traditional anti-virus program. Please check out these MakeUseOf articles for more advice on how to keep your system protected:

The 11 Best Free Spyware Removal Tools

Free spyware removal

Spyware is a form of malware that tries to steal information from you without you knowing or approving. It could be disguised as a legitimate program or work behind the scenes to do things like track web browsing data or monitor keystrokes to collect passwords.

You might have a spyware infection if your computer s performance has recently started to suffer, and especially if strange pop-ups are showing up, websites are redirecting to places you don t want to go, email contacts are getting odd spam messages that appear to be from you, or you re a victim of identify theft.

Below are several free anti-spyware tools that can scan your hard drive, flash drive, external hard drive, etc. to remove spyware. Some of them only work when you manually start the scan but others will monitor your computer all the time to make sure spyware can t modify your computer or monitor your information.

Note: All the programs mentioned below are known to scan for spyware but they might not scan for other things like viruses. Other scanners remove some kinds of malware but not spyware, so we ve omitted those from this list.

Important: Spyware is often bundled with a normal program s installer. See How to Safely Download Install Software for some tips on avoiding spyware in the first place.

Free spyware removal

SUPERAntiSpyware should be your very first pick if you want to get rid spyware that s already on your computer. It updates often, installs and scans quickly, and gives you complete control over what gets scanned.

It s able to check inside ZIP files, skip unknown file types (for a quicker scan), ignore files bigger than 4 MB, and skip over non-executable files (so that only EXEs and similar file types are scanned).

What really makes SUPERAntiSpyware stand out among the others in this list is that it can also be set up to only scan files that have been changed within the last so-many days (1 day, 5 days, etc.), ignore System Restore and Volume Information data, use more of the CPU for a faster scan (called Scan Boost), and even scan the files that shortcuts point to.

SUPERAntiSpyware can scan the whole computer or just parts of it where spyware normally exists. You can also run a Critical Point Scan to delete spyware that s currently running in memory or use the Custom Scan option to pick what gets scanned and where to check (flash drives, internal/external hard drives, select folders, etc.).

This anti-spyware tool can also delete temporary Windows files before the scan is started, exclude folders from scans, scan from the right-click context menu, and close down any open web browsers before scanning.

The free version is 100% free but you do have to manually run scans and definition updates (they don t happen automatically). However, these limitations are lifted with the professional version.

Tip: If you want to try the professional edition, you can enable the trial during installation of the free version. More

Spyware Definition – Free Spyware Removal Tool, Anti-spyware, free spyware removal.#Free #spyware #removal

Spyware

Spyware is a type of malware that hackers use to see your personal information, banking details, or more. We’ll show you the damage it can do, and why you should protect yourself with anti-spyware software.

What is spyware

Spyware is a type of malware that’s hard to detect. It collects information about your surfing habits, browsing history, or personal information (such as credit card numbers), and often uses the Internet to pass this information along to third parties without you knowing. Keyloggers are a type of spyware that monitors your keystrokes.

Free spyware removal

Where spyware comes from

Spyware is often bundled with other software or downloads on file-sharing sites (e.g., sites where you download free music or movies), or is installed when you open an email attachment. Because of the secretive nature of spyware, most people are not aware when spyware is on a computer that’s unprotected by anti-spyware.

How to recognize spyware

New and/or unidentifiable icons may appear in the task bar at the bottom of your screen, while searches may result in you being redirected to a different search engine. Random error messages appear when you perform operations that previously worked fine. But the best way to identify if you have been infected is to use a spyware scanner, which will be included in any spyware removal software.

How to remove spyware

Antivirus software can find and remove any spyware on your computer, since these usually include anti-spyware protection as well as spyware removal tools. You can also check Programs and Features for items that don’t belong on your computer.

How to prevent spyware
  • Use antivirus and anti-spyware software.
  • Ensure that your browser, operating system, and software have the latest updates and security patches.
  • Set your browser security and privacy levels higher.
  • Use extreme caution if you frequent file-sharing sites.
  • Don’t click on pop-up ads.
Use anti-spyware to protect yourself

There’s no better way to recognize, remove and prevent spyware than to use antivirus and anti-spyware software, the best of which is provided for free by Avast.

Why Avast?
  • Consistently rated “excellent” by industry experts
  • Trusted by 400 million people worldwide
  • It’s the “Antivirus with the lowest impact on PC performance” (AV comparatives)
  • Best features – unbreakable password security, home network protection, browser cleaning and much more
  • All for FREE

Free Virus and Malware Removal Tool – Norton Power Eraser, free malware removal.#Free #malware #removal

Download and run Norton Power Eraser – Free virus and malware removal tool

Norton Power Eraser is a free virus removal tool that can be downloaded and run to remove malware and threats from your computer. You can run this tool to scan for threats even if you have a Symantec product, or any other security product. If you cannot start the computer in Normal mode, you can run this tool in Safe mode. Norton Power Eraser is easy to download, and scans your computer quickly to detect the most aggressive computer viruses. You don’t need to install this tool.

The Norton Power Eraser tool is compatible with computers running Microsoft Windows operating systems only. It does not work with computers running on Mac OS X.

Norton Power Eraser uses aggressive methods to detect threats, and there is a risk that it can select some legitimate programs for removal. You should carefully review the scan results page before removing files. If you accidentally remove a legitimate program, you can run Norton Power Eraser to review past repair sessions and undo them.

Download Norton Power Eraser

Select the location as Desktop, and then click Save .

To run Norton Power Eraser, double-click the NPE.exe file.

If the User Account Control window prompts, click Yes or Continue .

Read the license agreement, and click Accept .

Norton Power Eraser checks for and downloads the new version if available.

Run a Scan

In the Norton Power Eraser window, click the Scan for Risks icon.

By default, Norton Power Eraser performs a Rootkit scan and requires a system restart. When you see a prompt to restart the computer, click Restart .

If you do not want to include the Rootkit scan, go to Settings , and uncheck the option Include Rootkit scan (requires a computer restart) .

Wait for the scan to complete.

Fix the risks

When Norton Power Eraser completes the scan, it displays the scan results. The items that Norton Power Eraser considers as risks, display the status as Bad and recommended action as Remove . The items that require further review display the status as Unknown .

Depending on your situation, do one of the following:

If you see No Risks Found, Norton Power Eraser did not detect any risks on your computer , click OK to exit.

If you see any files that are listed as Bad , the Remove check box under Action is checked automatically. It is recommended to remove these files.

If you see any files that are listed as Unknown , for each of these files, click the cloud icon next to it. It sends the file to a Symantec server and scans it using the traditional signature-based detection engines.

If the Cloud Scan result shows Bad for any file, click the Remove check box.

If the Cloud Scan result shows Not a Known Threat , do not click the Remove check box. The file may not be a threat, and needs further analysis.

Make sure that Create System Restore Point before proceeding with fix check box is selected.

If you are asked to restart the computer to complete the removal, click Restart Now .

After successful removal of the risk, click Done .
