What is Operations Management?

Operations management is a field that can, at times, be misunderstood because of its multidisciplinary nature. However, its functions form the lynchpin of businesses the world over and success can often rest squarely on its shoulders. The MBA in operations management is a common specialization among leading business schools the world over. So, what is operations management and what makes a good operations manager?

What does operations management involve?

Operations management is chiefly concerned with planning, organizing and supervising in the contexts of production, manufacturing or the provision of services. As such, it is delivery-focused, ensuring that an organization successfully turns inputs to outputs in an efficient manner. The inputs themselves could represent anything from materials, equipment and technology to human resources such as staff or workers.

Examples of the types of duties or specialist positions this encompasses are procurement (acquiring goods or services from external sources), managing relations with those involved in processes, and improving a company’s sustainability with regard to its use of resources.

Two key terms for operations management

There are two big terms that can help answer the question of what is operations management more precisely: supply chain management and logistics. With logistics, the careful and considered use of resources, as well as cost-effectiveness, has become increasingly important in an era in which resources can often be in short supply and customer expectations have skyrocketed.

Skills required of an operations manager

There are strong parallels between the skills required for effective operations management and those needed in both logistics and supply chain management. Consummate organizational ability is crucial in successfully enhancing efficiency and driving productivity as an operations manager.

One must be able to understand the series of processes within a company in order to get them to flow seamlessly, and in this sense the role is directly related to supply chain management. Meanwhile, the coordination involved in setting up these processes in practice represents logistics; the combination of understanding and coordinating the work of a company are therefore central to being a successful operations manager.

The MBA in operations management

An MBA in operations management or a specialization in a related field, such as logistics or supply chain management, should help students to enter the industry by developing the requisite skillset or to help those already in the industry to widen their knowledge and push on into a business leadership role.

Studying an MBA in operations management commonly offers a global perspective on industry trends and an awareness of any financial regulations or political uncertainties that could impact an organization. Indeed, risk management, getting to grips with the industry’s inherent complexities and responding well to change will be a strong consideration for students during their course.

Emphasizing the importance of strategic thinking is also a cornerstone of many leading operations management programs, something that should enable graduates to ensure their organization stays ahead of its competition.

Links to supply chain management highlighted by course options

MIT Sloan offers a dual degree with its engineering school, highlighting its interrelations with other disciplines. At the end of two years, graduates leave the Leaders for Global Operations (LGO) program with both an MBA and an MSc. The course has a wealth of company partners in the field of global operations and manufacturing who host plant visits and provide opportunities for the program’s six-month internship segment. Indeed, just over half of graduates in 2012 went on to work for a partner company, according to the school’s site. from a list that included Caterpillar, Inc. and Intel Corporation.

The UK’s Cass Business School, meanwhile, begins its specialized master’s in Global Supply Chain Management (GSCM) this fall. The one-year course will place operations management alongside insights into strategic supply chain, global procurement, business sustainability and finance.

Contextualizing the role of the operations manager

The operations manager is able to transcend industries and because of this, exact functions can vary based on the type of company you work for. At the base level, the two main streams an operations manager might belong to can be reduced to companies with a concentration on manufacturing and production, or those that provide services.

Operations management roles within say, a pharmaceutical company fall under the category of production. Planning and coordinating the use of resources to ensure products are designed, created and dispatched to hospitals, chemists and so on, ensure not only that these products are prepared, but also that they are available to customers.

Meanwhile, an airline company will often see the operations manager focus on services – transporting passengers and/or cargo from one place to another.

In addition, it is likely that a manufacturing focus on the delivery of a tangible product will involve less direct contact with customers than a services role.

These examples illustrate the clear distinction between the roles of an operations manager in two distinct industries.

However, in reality most companies will not fit easily into one category or the other in the entirety of its operations, according to a book published by FT Press. A car company doesn’t simply manufacture cars, it also services them. A café serving coffee might very easily also produce their own coffee. There is also what is known as quasi-manufacturing organizations. which seem more like manufacturing firms, but are clearly providing a service, such as an automated warehouse dispatching goods.

The more one analyses the question what is operations management the more one sees how integral the position can be to any given company, be it small or large. There can be strong overlap with supply chain management, logistics or engineering, but there are many other industries and areas where operations functions and the skills of an effective operations manager are strongly tied to an organization’s lasting success.

Henderson Land to pay record $3 billion for Hong Kong car park site

HONG KONG Henderson Land Development ( 0012.HK ) won a hotly contested auction on Tuesday, agreeing to pay a record HK$23.3 billion ($3 billion) for a commercial property site in the heart of Hong Kong’s central business district currently being used as a public car park.

It outbid eight other developers including local giants Cheung Kong Property Holdings ( 1113.HK ) and Sun Hung Kai Properties ( 0016.HK ) to take ownership of the site in the Central area, where office vacancy rates are less than 2 percent.

The price beat market estimates for between HK$14 billion and HK$22.3 billion. The lump sum translates into just over HK$50,000 ($6,400) per square foot – a record price paid for land per square foot in crowded Hong Kong, one of the most expensive real estate markets in the world.

Henderson Land, one of the city’s four major property developers, was founded by Hong Kong’s second richest man Lee Shau-kee.

The company, which also has investments in at least 14 mainland Chinese cities, does not have its own flagship skyscraper in Hong Kong and analysts expect it to move its headquarters to this new location upon completion.

The site, at Murray Road, is now a public car park squeezed between Cheung Kong Center and Hutchison House, two major flagship buildings owned by the city’s richest man Li Ka-shing.

It is the only plot of large-scale commercial land put up for sale in the district in two decades and was seen as a prime site for a company headquarters thanks to its location and gross floor area of more than 460,000 square feet.

“The company is optimistic of the long-term prospect of this investment. The site will be developed into a landmark office building with retail facilities and is expected to be completed in around 2022,” Henderson Land said in a statement.

The sale comes as the availability of office space remains tight in the prestigious Central district and mainland Chinese financial companies are eager to set up offices there, pushing prices ever higher.

“This transaction sends a very positive sign to office prices in Central,” said Antonio Wu, deputy managing director of property consultancy Colliers International Hong Kong.

European and U.S. financial firms, trying to cut costs, reduced their presence in the greater Central area by 146,000 square foot and 28,000 square foot respectively in the three-year period to March 2016, according to a November report by property consultancy CBRE.

During the same three-year period, their Chinese counterparts took up 73 percent of the total banking and financial sector space expansion in the area, CBRE added.

The latest land sale halts a winning streak of prime land plots being acquired by mainland Chinese developers marking their territory in the former British colony, where government intervention is minimum and financing costs are low.

Mainland Chinese firms have piled in to snatch up high-profile office towers in Hong Kong, with property giant China Evergrande Group ( 3333.HK ) splurging a record-breaking HK$12.5 billion for a building in Wan Chai and state-owned China Life Insurance Co Ltd ( 2628.HK ) buying an office tower in Kowloon’s Hung Hom district for HK$5.85 billion two years ago.

China’s strengthening of capital controls late last year, in an attempt to restrict funds flowing out of the country as the yuan plummeted, could be a factor behind the dampened enthusiasm for the rare Central site, analysts said.

“The site cannot be partitioned for sale, and in recent months there have been controls over mainland Chinese capital outflow. These might affect the prices offered by mainland Chinese firms,” senior director of property consultancy Knight Frank Hong Kong, Thomas Lam, said in a text message.

“But I believe mainland Chinese firms remain very interested in the Hong Kong property market.”

In 2015-2016, mainland Chinese companies gobbled up 29 percent of land sold for development in Hong Kong, according to industry figures.

Two mainland Chinese developers also shattered the city’s record for the most expensive piece of residential land ever sold when they jointly bought an oceanfront site on southern Hong Kong island at HK$16.9 billion ($2.18 billion) in February.

Army Ranger Training

Like all Ranger candidates you will begin with nine weeks of Boot Camp. Upon completion of Basic Training you will attend Advanced Individual Training to earn your Military Occupational Specialty (MOS). This training varies in length depending on your selected MOS.

Tip: Each MOS also has its own specific ASVAB requirements. Scoring high on the ASVAB is key to being able to choose an MOS that offers the highest bonuses and the best career opportunities in the Army. After graduating AIT your training will continue at Army Airborne School and then on to the Ranger Indoctrination Program (RIP) in Fort Benning, GA.

Army Airborne School
Your next step will be to complete Airborne training. Airborne School is a unique experience requiring special dedication and a desire to be challenged mentally and physically. This three-week course, also known as Basic Airborne Training, teaches you the techniques involved in parachuting from airplanes and landing safely. The final test includes a non-assisted jump.

Airborne school is broken down into 3 weeks. The following explains the training you must complete for each week.

Ground Week:
You start with an intensive program of instruction to build individual airborne skills. These skills prepare you to make a parachute jump and land safely. You will train on the mock door, the 34-foot tower and the lateral drift apparatus.

Tower Week:
Tower Week completes your individual skill training and builds your team effort skills. To go forward to Jump Week, you must qualify on the Swing Lander Trainer (SLT), master the mass exit procedures from the 34-foot tower, and pass all physical training requirements.

Jump Week:
During Jump Week, you must successfully complete five jumps at 1,250 feet from a C-130 or C-141 aircraft. If you successfully meet the course requirements you will be granted an additional skill identifier and will be authorized to wear the coveted Silver Wing on your uniform.

When you graduate from Airborne School you will be assigned to the 75th Ranger Regiment to attend the Ranger Indoctrination Program (RIP).

The Ranger Indoctrination Program
The Ranger Indoctrination Program (RIP) begins when the Ranger Liaison picks up the Ranger candidates at Airborne School – just after graduation – to immediately begin the program. The program is designed to determine if you are suitable for service in the 75th Ranger Regiment.

The four-week program consists of physical training and continuous preparation for service in the Regiment. It is important that you learn the operational procedures, equipment, and the standards of the Regiment prior to your assignment.

    The Ranger Indoctrination Program includes the following training:
  • Daily Physical Training
  • Ranger History test
  • Map Reading
  • APF
  • Airborne Operation
  • Ranger Standards
  • Day and night land navigation
  • 5-mile run
  • Combatives
  • Knots
  • Combat Water Survival Test
  • 6, 8 and 10-mile road marches
  • Driver Training (DDC Card)
  • Fast Rope Training
  • Combat Lifesaver certification
    • To pass RIP and qualify for the 75th Ranger Regiment you must meet the following criteria:
    • Score 60 percent on the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) in the 17 to 21 age group
    • Complete a 5-mile run in less than 8 minutes per mile
    • Successfully complete the Combat Water Survival Test (CWST) – You must be able to complete 15 meters in BDU’s, boots and LBE.
    • You must complete 2 of 3 road marches, one of which must be a 10-mile road march
    • You must score at least 70 percent on all exams

    Once you have completed RIP, you will finally be a Ranger and you will receive an assignment to either the 75th Ranger Regiment Headquarters or one of the three Ranger Battalions.

    Ranger School
    After you have proven yourself at your Ranger Battalion your next step will be to go to Ranger School. This school is a requirement for becoming a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) in the Rangers.

    Ranger School is one of the toughest training schools a soldier can volunteer for. Army Ranger NCOs are experts in leading soldiers on difficult missions-and to do this they need rigorous training. For over two months, Ranger students train to exhaustion, pushing the limits of their minds and bodies.

    There are three distinct phases of Ranger School that require soldiers to make quick decisions in adverse situations-these phases are called crawl, walk and run.

    Crawl (Darby) Phase
    The Crawl Phase lasts 20 days. It’s designed to assess and develop the necessary physical and mental skills to complete combat missions and the remainder of Ranger School successfully. If you are not in top physical condition when you report to the Ranger School, you will have extreme difficulty keeping up with the fast pace of Ranger training, especially during this first phase.

    Walk (Mountain) Phase
    The Walk Phase takes place in the mountains and lasts 21 days. During this phase, you will receive instruction on military mountaineering tasks as well as techniques for employing squads and platoons for continuous combat patrol operations in a mountainous environment. You will further develop your ability to command and control a platoon-sized patrol through planning, preparing and executing a variety of combat patrol missions.

    Run (Swamp) Phase
    The Run Phase of Ranger School continues to develop your combat arms functional skills. You must be capable of operating effectively under conditions of extreme mental and physical stress. This is accomplished through exercises in extended platoon-level patrol operations in a swamp environment. Run Phase training further develops your ability to lead small units on airborne, air assault, small boat, ship-to-shore, and dismounted combat patrol operations in a low intensity combat environment against a well-trained, sophisticated enemy.

    For a long time, VMware was content to focus on the hypervisor and allow partners to complement that product with their own solutions. Even when VMware included some additional functionality in its own products, such functionality was often inferior to what was available in the broader partner market. In recent years, however, VMware is taking on the very partner market that helped the company become the infrastructure behemoth it is today. From backup to disaster recovery to storage and to comprehensive monitoring, VMware is working hard to expand their share of the markets beyond the hypervisor.

    vCenter Operations Manager vCOPS for short is one such foray into a space beyond the base hypervisor. As you can see in Figure 1, vCOPS provides you with an overall health dashboard.

    Workload details and environmental alerts

    The red spots shown in Figure 1 require attention of some kind. This is where vCOPS workload details function comes into play. This function provides a bit more depth into a specific aspect of the environment, as shown in Figure 2 below. Here, you can see that the current host is RAM bound (as evidenced by the fact that RAM is the most used resource, percentage wise, at 50%). This is the view to use to get information about host workloads.

    Perhaps one of the most important jobs that a monitoring system performs is altering administrators when something goes amiss. vCOPS performs this function well and brings forth items that require immediate attention as well as those that need attention at some point. In Figure 3, notice that the alert isn t one that is indicating an availability issue with the computing environment, but is indicating that individual workloads may be overprovisioned, leading to wasted resources. You ll learn more about capacity management later. Here, though, vCOPS is letting you know that you might have the opportunity to reclaim 35 vCPUS, 1.5 TB of disk space and 205 GB of RAM.

    Perhaps one of the most vexing challenges in infrastructure monitoring is attempting to determine cause/correlation between issues that arise in the environment and other activities that may have taken place in the environment. This feature means that customers don t have to wade through log files and other documentation to determine what may have changed in the environment.

    Capacity management

    The ability to plan for ongoing environment resource needs is a critical one that is often overlooked until it s to late. I ve seen many cases in which organizations, for example, run out of disk space or exhaust memory resources and experience performance and availability issues while they await the arrival of new resources

    vCOPS provides administrators with all kinds of information about ways that capacity is managed and how certain parts of the environment are impacting capacity. For example, the Powered Off Virtual Machines report shows administrators how much provisioned disk space is currently being used by powered off virtual machines. With this report, administrators can start to evaluate the need for these virtual machines and remove them in order to free up resources.

    Further, vCOPS provides administrators with capacity forecasting information that can be used to help predict when new resource expenditures will be necessary in order to keep paced with anticipated growth.

    To aid in maximizing the capacity of the virtual environment, vCOPS also monitors running virtual machines and determines whether or not their configuration levels are appropriate. If they are oversized, vCOPS provides this information to the administrator, as shown below in Figure 6. Here, you can see all of the resource reclamation recommendations that vCOPS is making.

    This kind of information provides administrators to improve the overall economics of the virtual environment by lowering the total cost per workload and enabling the potential to increase virtual machine density.

    Of course, vCOPS would be a pretty terrible monitoring solution if it didn t have some kind of reporting capability. Fortunately, as shown in Figure 7, this capability is provided in vCOPS.

    Additional suite components

    The information that I ve provided so far is just the tip of the iceberg, though. The vCenter Operations Management Suite provides much more than just monitoring and capacity management tools.

    vCenter Configuration Manager

    Change is the enemy of availability and cost. To be specific, unmanaged and undocumented change in an environment can lead to issues that result in loss of service and increase in expenses. By normalizing an environment and then tracking and managing deviations from a baseline, an IT organization can help improve the overall stability of an environment while keeping costs reasonable.

    vCenter Configuration Manager is VMware s answer to addressing this need. Here are some of the product s capabilities:

    • Centralize and monitor baseline configurations across the virtual and physical environment (VMware, Windows, Linux).
    • Capture ongoing configuration data information to provide administrators with delta information that can be used.
    • In some cases, take automated action to bring a system back into compliance.

    vCenter Hyperic

    Hyperic brings to vCOPS the ability to monitor operating systems, middleware environments, and applications. These applications can run on cloud, physical, or virtual infrastructure. Here s a look at the services that are supported by Hyperic.

    vCenter Infrastructure Navigator

    Infrastructure Navigator discovers dependencies that may exist between infrastructure and applications and provides a visual look at how these dependencies exist in the organization. This information helps administrators understand the impact of changes in the environment.

    vCenter Chargeback Manager

    Ensuring that the right department or business unit covers the costs for their services is an essential task in many organizations. It can also be a complex one. As such, VMware includes in the suite Chargeback Manager, which provides organizations with a vCenter-integrated tool for managing this activity.

    Summary

    Gone are the days when organizations could get by on just current performance management metrics. Today s complex and cost-sensitive organizations need tools that can provide better total cost of ownership prospects and that can solve more than just the need for monitoring.
