Lyme disease can be a debilitating illness having a profound effect on interpersonal relationships and a patient s ability to function at home, in school, and in the workplace. Making matters worse, most chronic Lyme patients suffer from delayed or inaccurate diagnoses prior to finding a doctor who will treat their illness effectively. Some patients have spent months or even years trying different treatments that don’t work, since their diagnosis was, in fact, wrong. Patients often feel isolated and trapped when those around them do not understand the complexity of their illness and what they are experiencing.

As a Lyme-literate psychotherapist, I become an integral part of your treatment team as you progress toward recovery. I provide individual psychotherapy or family therapy including support, direction, and strategies for coping and healing. My ability to do that comes from my having a comprehensive understanding of tick-borne diseases and their impact on patients, who have complex medical issues, and are living in a world where their illness is often denied and validation is rare.

As a Lyme-literate psychotherapist, I have had extensive training which enables me to understand Lyme and other tick-borne diseases, their impact on the body, brain, and life of a patient. Through the therapeutic process, you can expect to gain:

  • An understanding of the nature of your illness and effective strategies to deal with it.
  • An ability to cope with symptom flares and side effects of medications, while functioning at the highest possible level.
  • An ability to advocate, if necessary, on behalf of a child with Lyme disease in their school and community.
  • Enhanced communications and problem-solving skills both within and outside of your family.
  • An ability to establish boundaries around those who lack an understanding of your illness.

MSW Program International Applicants

International applicants are those persons who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Institutions are required by U.S. federal immigration laws to obtain certification that international applicants have adequate financial resources to provide for their expenses while attending school.

International students may apply for School of Social Work merit scholarship aid, which can be utilized toward certifying that adequate funds are available. Most merit scholarships cover only partial tuition amounts. To apply for scholarship aid, please complete the School of Social Work Financial Aid Application for incoming students. NOTE: This application is available through the online MSW application or can be submitted in hard copy.

International students may also apply to our special programs. Special program applications are available through the online MSW application.

All international applicants must submit an Affidavit of Financial Support with the application materials, certifying the availability of a minimum of $136,400 (in U.S. dollars) for their expenses for four full-time terms of study, exclusive of travel to and from the United States and exclusive of dependent expenses. Proof of adequate funding may include funds from a variety of sources, including sponsoring organizations or governments, continuance of salary, the applicant’s family, or the applicant’s personal funds. Official financial documentation can be in the form of original certified bank statements or an original letter of financial support from an organization, foundation, or government sponsor verifying the amount and duration of funds that are available to you. This documentation is required for visa documents to be issued to enter the United States.

English Proficiency

Because of the importance we place on students’ ability to communicate effectively in both the classroom and field instruction setting, applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency. Please review our English proficiency requirement and exemption information.

Health Screening

Certain entering international students must be screened for tuberculosis. Screening will be offered free on campus. Please visit the UHS website for more information .

On-Campus University Housing

International graduate and professional students are eligible to live in the Northwood Community Apartments, as well as the Munger Graduate Residences. Students from over 70 countries live in on-campus University housing. Newly admitted and matriculated (that is, those that have paid their enrollment deposit) students will receive an email from the University Housing Office with on-campus University housing information. Other University housing accommodations typically are not available for graduate or professional students. Visit the Housing Office website or U-M International Center Housing webpage for more information.

Portland State University Graduate Program Reviews

Graduation Year: 2016

I have received my Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Sciences Program in 2016 Spring. The institution is well-equipped, and there is a strong focus on research. The ESM Program that I completed is very well developed, it contains many practical classes, labs, and real-life projects that well prepares you for your future career.

Degree: Liberal Studies

Graduation Year: 2017

The Spanish Section of the World Languages and Literatures Department at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon offers an intellectually-stimulating graduate program. All of the professors hold PhD’s in their respective fields and cover an array of areas of specializations within Spanish literature. One of most valuable aspects of this particular program is the unequivocal support and guidance the faculty provides to its students.

Graduation Year: 2019

I am really appreciating my education at Portland State. My program is great although it is lacking in multicultural perspectives in counseling and needs more instructors with social justice lenses. However, i know that the program is currently working diligently to address this deficiency.

Kristen Kelley – 02-05-2017

Graduation Year: 2019

The MSW program at Portland State is well ranked for many reasons. The environment is welcoming and inclusive, the staff and courses push students out of their comfort zone to fully prepare them for their rigorous careers ahead. I feel as if my education is well-rounded and I am acquiring skills that are much needed out in the work force, no matter what setting I end up in. The opportunities provided have enabled me to make connections and learn from experiential practice.

MBA Class of 2010 – 01-31-2017

State Authorization for Distance (Online) Education Programs and Students

(Current as of 11/08/13) :

Notice for applicants from outside the State of Oregon

If you are from outside the State of Oregon and you are interested in applying to or want to enroll in an online degree, certificate program or individual online course at Portland State University, it is important to check the list below to make sure authorization in your state of residence is verified.

In October 2010, the U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) released the State Authorization regulations. These regulations specifically include distance education (online learning, correspondence courses, etc). They require all institutions of higher education to seek authorization in every state (and territory) in which they operate distance education programs in order to maintain eligibility for federal financial aid. Authorization (sometimes referred to as registration, licensure, approval, etc.) indicates that certain minimum standards have been met by the institution under the laws and regulations of that state.

The following is the most pertinent passage of the state authorization rule:

If an institution is offering postsecondary education through distance or correspondence education to students in a State in which it is not physically located or in which it is otherwise subject to State jurisdiction as determined by the State, the institution must meet any State requirements for it to be legally offering postsecondary distance or correspondence education in that State. An institution must be able to document to the Secretary the State s approval upon request (Authority: 20 U.S.C. 1001 and 1002).

In other words, in order to offer online educational opportunities to other states residents, PSU must comply with states policies for distance education and be able to demonstrate compliance upon request. If PSU were to be found not in compliance, then all students enrolled at PSU would not be allowed to use Title IV, HEA program funds (federal financial aid grants) to pay for their education.

PSU has received authorization or is exempt from authorization in all US states except those mentioned below. Residents from one of the states where PSU has decided not to submit a request for authorization due to high and restrictive fees, should not submit an application for admission to the University. We advise students residing in Arkansas and Minnesota not to enroll in distance education classes at Portland State University.

PSU has not submitted requests for authorization from the following states:

PSU is currently in the process of obtaining authorization to offer online education in Maryland.

This applies to Distance Learning programs ONLY. Students from Arkansas and Minnesota who are interested in our on campus programs are encouraged to contact PSU.

Programme Structure

Practice and Leadership with Communities and Organizations prepares students for careers in community practice, human services administration, policy practice, and advocacy. This is geared toward students who are currently working in the field and want to focus on developing leadership skills (for any kind of setting – clinical or community based) or who have an interest in community practice. Community practice includes individual short-term counseling, case management, and advocacy, as well as work with groups of individuals. These skills are applicable to many settings, though it will not be the best match for students wanting to focus on developing clinical (mental health) therapy skills.
