So happy to have come across this site! I just did a dance for some youth last night, but didn t have the calls for Oh Johnny Oh on my music my voice was giving out so went looking for the music with calls and found this. What a treasure! Now we will have to do it all again with some new dances to try! Thank you so much for sharing!!

Thank you for making this free! I am really excited to dance to this music!

Could you add the history for each of these dances/songs? We are going on trek and trying to teach the history of things as much as possible while we have fun so it s not all just fun and games. Thanks I tried in particular to look up the history of Oh Johnny and couldn t find anything.

What you have called Heel and Toe Polka is also known as the Patty Cake Polka. See http://www.lloydshaw.org/Catalogue/CueSheets/Community/PattyCakePolka.htm. It s also done to the Jenny Lind Polka from 1844, a piece of music equally contemporary with the original handcart trek era.

This is the best thing ever! Thank you so much for doing this, I love it!;]

I m so excited to find this site. Exactly what we needed for our ward Ho Down here in Brisbane Australia! Thankyou for sharing.

This is great! I ve been a square dance caller since the mid-70 s and I m always glad to find new dances and new material. I mostly call Modern Western Style Square Dancing but I love the traditional dance routines for use at fun nights and for square dance parties. I have a question about your use of top couples . I ve always heard it as head couples and side couples. Is the term top couples something that you coined? Or is this a term that s common and prevalent in traditional dance or possibly in your area?

Also, since you offer the music as Free Music Download, can you tell me if there are any restrictions in use of this music?

Thank you so much for sharing. If you have any other dances or music, I d love to hear about it.

This awesome! I do folk dancing with my elementary students and am happy to find some new music. We do the heel toe polka a little differently as the Patty-cake Polka, but I want to try it your way when I lead an adult dance next month.

Does anyone know of any other songs that would go well with the Virginia Reel? We are doing this in a play, and want another song.

I volunteered to teach American folk dances at our Thanksgiving community celebration. This is perfect for learning the dances and then playing the music which goes with them. Thank you so much! Let s make folk dances a tradition for Thanksgiving and Fourth of July Independence Day.

You guys are my hero s! We have done a couple of parties for friends and attempted barn dancing . Your music and videos and going make our lives so much easier, and give us lots of fun. Thank you so much! X

A million thank yous for this site. Our stake activity is saved!

Thank you. This is a great resource!

We have just had a
really successful Barn Dance party for my wife s 80th, in spite of the fact that I had very little experience of barn dances, zero experience of calling, and actually have very little understanding of rhythm. However, I thought: I have learned an unwritten language, so I can learn how to call some Barn Dances. After much desperation, I came across your website, which really saved my bacon as we say in England; and after watching your videos, and downloading the music, I was confident enough to go ahead with it all. (5 dances) I can t say everything went entirely accurately (!) but I never got totally lost, the chaos was relatively minimal and everyone had a marvellous
time. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your skill with beginners like me!

Marcellus Carl Harper

Thanks you so much for providing this! When I was small, my father was a square dance caller, and I remember him practicing at home. I never thought I d be asked to help with a trek. You are enabling us to succeed. I m sure our youth will love these dances Thank you!

Thank you so much! I d love to learn it with my students!

Mark Twain on Coldest Winter

Claim: Mark Twain once asserted The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.

Origins: San Francisco s weather patterns have confounded those who live there and those who visit for as long as there s been a San Francisco. It may be California, and it may be lovely, but the wind can be vicious, and those summertime temperatures can be disappointing bordering on in danger

of freezing if one doesn t keep moving.

Twain s droll comment is widely repeated to the point that you can t read a news story that makes mention of the cold of San Franciscan summers and not trip over it. It s a great quote. It s a wonderfully crafted quote. And it s a darned shame Twain never said it.

Searches of Twain writings, private letters, and other publications fail to locate this witticism. The closest resemblance to it appears in an 1879 letter in which Twain quoted a wag who, when asked if he d ever seen such a cold winter, replied, Yes, last summer. Twain then added his own comment, I judge he spent his summer in Paris. (Twain s rejoinder is an example of treppenwitz the wit of the stairway, those brilliant comebacks one thinks of only long after the moment has passed.)

Mark Twain uttered a great many memorable lines during his lifetime, but he has also had many a saying attributed to him that he never gave voice to. Another weather-related quote wrongly credited to Twain is the quip that Everyone talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it. (However, Twain did say If you don t like the weather in New England, just wait a few minutes. )

Other apocryphal Twainisms include:
I

  • There are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies, and statistics. (When Twain mentioned this pithy saying in his autobiography, he credited it to Benjamin Disraeli.)
  • To cease smoking is the easiest thing I ever did. I ought to know because I ve done it a thousand times.
  • Wagner s music is better than it sounds. (Twain was fond of using this quote, but he appropriately credited it to Edgar Wilson Nye, a fellow humorist.)
  • When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.
  • The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated. (Actually, in 1897, when reports of the illness of James Ross Clemens, a cousin, were somehow misconstrued to mean that Twain himself was lying at death s door in London, he cleared up matters by telling the reporter who d stopped by to check on him that The report of my death was an exaggeration. The greatly was added by Twain himself years after the fact in preparing an account of this incident. In his first draft he has himself directing the reporter to Say the report is exaggerated, but in a later draft he scribbled greatly in front of exaggerated. And there was never a wire sent to a London paper, as the anecdote now has it.)
  • So I became a newspaperman. I hated to do it, but I couldn t find honest employment.
  • The only way for a newspaperman to look at a politician is down .
  • For every problem there is always a solution that is simple, obvious, and wrong.
  • The finest Congress money can buy.
  • Whenever I feel the urge to exercise I lie down until it goes away.
  • Why does Twain attract so many misattributed witticisms? According to Ralph Keyes in Nice Guys Finish Seventh. his compendium of misattributed and false quotes, Any orphan line with even a hint of drollness is subject to being put in his [Twain s] mouth. Robert Hirst, General Editor of the University of California s Mark Twain Project, says: It s like an insurance policy. Attributing something to Mark Twain adds to the joke. When they first hear his name, people are disposed to laugh; they re ready to laugh. That s the chief reason he s saddled with so much stuff that isn t his.

Good lines become great ones when presented as the utterances of those whom we already hold in high esteem for their wit.

Thank you so much! I d love to learn it with my students!
