Adblock for Internet Explorer

What is Simple Adblock

Simple Adblock is the easy approach to adblocking. Select your country and the adblocker will automatically retrieve the latest filterupdates from the various adblock communities to ensure an adblocker always up-to-date.

With the development of Simple Adblock we focus on:

  1. Simplicity
Adblocking can be complex and the filterformats are not easy for everyone to define. With Simple Adblock we try to make it simple. Everything is configured automatically and the user should never edit any adblock filters.
  2. Adblockplus filterformats
Simple Adblock uses the popular Adblockplus filter format for blocking ads. We follow the development of Adblockplus for Firefox to make sure we use the same filter formats. That way the filterlists maintained by many online communities can be used. Learn more about the adblock filters used.
  3. Performance
Simple Adblock runs as a plugin within Internet Explorer. The ultimate goal is loading webpages faster. With Simple Adblock we keep the plugin lightweight and the adblock algorithms optimized, so you get the fastest pageloading possible.

Internet Explorer Integration

Upon installation, a welcome page will appear, when you open Internet Explorer. The basic configuration is made on the welcome page and because Simple Adblock is automatically updated, Simple Adblock can actually run within Internet Explorer without any further configuration.

Simple Adblock ads a menu icon to the status bar within Internet Explorer. From the Adblock menu you can disable adblocking on a domain, completely or access the settings.

SafeHouse Explorer

Editors’ Review

SafeHouse Explorer creates secure, strongly encrypted volumes that can secure huge amounts of data on your main system, portable devices, and even USB drives and other storage media yet remain hidden until accessed with a password. It’s portable freeware that can run without being installed, even from a USB drive or the Internet, giving you access to your protected files anywhere, including public computers. It may also be the easiest tool of its type we’ve tried.

SafeHouse Explorer is a slimmed-down but fully functional version of the developer’s commercial products, and it shares the same technology for creating secure volumes with 256-bit encryption in your system. Individual volumes can be up to 2TB in size, and you can create as many volumes as you like, so storage size isn’t a problem. The volumes are standard Windows files, too, and SafeHouse Explorer is intended to work like Explorer, with tree views, drag-and-drop, and familiar menus. In fact, it’s easy to create a new volume just by examining the layout and clicking some buttons, but we think a much better idea is just to follow the program’s setup wizard, which is one of the best we’ve seen. It walked us through the process of creating a new volume, setting up a password, securing our data, and retrieving it with clear explanations and frequent screenshots. In the time it took to finish the wizard, we’d created a large volume of secure, hidden storage space on our PC. Like hidden system files, our volume couldn’t be uncovered or opened without entering our password. The program offers some interesting options, such as Tools menu items for creating self-extracting volumes, extracting volumes from executable files, and copying files to a memory stick.

Developer PC Dynamics suggests securing your USB drive before it’s lost or stolen and you become the next YouTube sensation. We agree, and we’d add personal and financial records to the list; whatever you’ve got in Windows, SafeHouse Explorer can secure it.

First Look: Internet Explorer 8 Is Microsoft’s First Truly Modern Browser

First Look: Internet Explorer 8 Is Microsoft s First Truly Modern Browser

Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 on the Windows XP desktop.

The most popular web browser in the world has been reborn.

Microsoft made the latest version of Internet Explorer available as a free download Thursday. You can grab Internet Explorer 8 for Windows Vista or Windows XP (but not Windows 7) at microsoft.com/ie8 .

IE8 has been in development for several months. If you ve been using the pre-release betas or the most recent release candidate, then today s release won t be all that new to your eyes. Aside from some minor tweaks, the code is very much the same as what s been publicly available for almost half a year.

However, if you re coming to this release with fresh eyes, upgrading from Internet Explorer 7 or (heaven forbid) Internet Explorer 6, then you ll notice huge improvements across the board.

Internet Explorer 8 is a thoroughly modern browser. Most significantly, it has been engineered to improve the performance of web applications. As more of our productivity tasks are moving off the desktop and into web apps like Gmail and Google Docs, this is an essential next step in the evolution of every browser. In our testing of pre-release versions of IE8, we noticed significant improvements to Ajax-heavy web apps like Gmail and Flickr. Performance on JavaScript-heavy pages like those has stayed consistent in the final version.

The new browser also contains each webapp in its own tab, so if one site crashes, it just crashes the tab instead of bringing the entire browser down with it.

Microsoft has improved its support for web standards to a point, choosing to support CSS up to version 2.1. Support for CSS 3 is minimal, with only vertical text making the cut. Support for SVG, rounded corners, audio and video tags and other proposed standards are penciled in for future versions .

Search is central to the experience, as it should be. IE8 has a smart address bar — start typing a URL and a drop-down offers suggested destinations from your recent history, favorites and feeds. The search box also returns preliminary results as you type. Any website can build a plug-in search engine that gives richer results, complete with thumbnail images, snippets of text and page descriptions. IE8 arrives with options to install such smart engines for Amazon, The New York Times and Wikipedia with a few clicks.

There s a private browsing mode and new protections against scripting attacks. A feature called Accelerators extends the semantic web by providing context-sensitive commands in when you right-click on different page elements. Highlight some text and right-click, for example, and you re given options to Blog this or Search for this or Translate this.

Users upgrading from previous versions of IE are going to be pleased. There are bunches of little things, like new bookmark manager and the ability to isolate and print a specific part of any page, that are just added niceties. But it s the five S s — speed, stability, security, standards and search — that are the most important enhancements.

If you re a devotee of any other browser, you re probably groaning yourself silly right now, and with good reason. Mozilla s open source Firefox browser has long been ahead of the curve on many of these features, like the smart address bar and the security protections. Opera is way ahead on emerging standards like CSS 3 and HTML 5. Google Chrome upped the ante with private browsing mode (aka porn mode ) and isolated web apps within tabs.

And IE8 is faster than IE7, but it s not the fastest. We haven t done any controlled speed tests, but Chrome and the latest beta of Firefox (3.1 beta 3) on Windows are both clearly faster at rendering the Wired.com, Ars Technica and Digg front pages than IE8.

But since somewhere between 60 percent and 75 percent of the web still uses IE, upgrading those users will be an advancement for the web as a whole. A better IE, even if it s not as bleeding-edge as other browsers, is a good thing for everyone.

It s a manual download right now, but IE8 will be pushed out to all Windows users running Windows Updater later this spring. There s also an IE8 update blocker available for controlled environments.

This release of IE8 is only for Windows Vista and Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later. Windows 7 beta testers can t download the new code. Instead, they ll get their own, Win7-optimized version of IE8 when the new OS arrives later this year.

Word to the wise: Installing IE 8 on Windows XP is a huge test of patience. After downloading the installer, you ll be asked to verify Windows through Windows Genuine Advantage, then install additional components and numerous updates, then reboot, then check for malicious software, then install more updates, then reboot again. The whole time, you re never shown a progress bar, told where you are in the process or given any indication of how much longer the installation might take. Expect the full installation to take as long as 30 painful minutes.

IE8 may be a whole new bag, but some things never change.

Third-Row, 7-Seat Family Vehicles With Highest Gas Mileage

2012 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

We get asked a lot about hybrids with seven seats.

The answer is simple: There’s only one, the 2012 Toyota Highlander Hybrid.

But the question is really more about fuel efficiency: What family vehicles with a third row of seats that can carry seven people get the best gas mileage?

It’s a major question for larger families, those with kids on sports teams or other after-school activities. and even sometimes just people who cart around a lot of people, for whatever reason.

If you buy based on EPA gas-mileage ratings, the 2012 Highlander Hybrid is at the top of the list.

But we’ll focus on the top three here: one Japanese, one Korean, and one North American.

For a complete and exhaustive list of no fewer than 30 separate vehicles with seven or eight seating positions, ranked by gas mileage, see “2012 Family Vehicles: The Most People, The Most Mileage ” at our sister site, FamilyCarGuide.com.

Meanwhile, here are the three crossovers with at least seven seats that get the best gas mileage:

2011 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

2012 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. 28 mpg city, 28 mpg highway – 28 mpg combined

Available only with all-wheel drive and a 3.5-liter V-6 engine paired with Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive, the 2012 Highlander Hybrid is the unquestioned mileage champ of the seven-seat fleet.

Considering that it outdoes two four-cylinder, front-wheel drive crossovers on combined EPA mileage rating, the benefits of Toyota’s hybrid system are highlighted in the Highlander.

That all-wheel drive, however, powers the rear wheels not through mechanically-linked drive shafts but with an electric motor, separate from the motors up front in the hybrid transmission that turns the front wheels.

Unlike mechanical all-wheel drive, which will turn the wheels until the engine stalls, Toyota builds in circuitry to protect that rear drive motor from overheating. That offers at least a theoretical possibility that the rear wheels could be depowered right when you need them the most, in slippery mud or ice or on steep slopes.

Toyota has all sorts of caveats in its owners manual about not using the all-wheel drive off road. Knowing a few Highlander Hybrid drivers, we don’t think they spend a lot of time rock-climbing. It’s more about muddy suburban soccer fields.

2012 Kia Sorento

2012 Kia Sorento (2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, front-wheel drive): 22 mpg city, 32 mpg highway – 25 mpg combined

If you opt for the Kia Sorento with the base 2.4-liter engine and six-speed automatic transmission, you can come within about 15 percent of the Highlander Hybrid’s combined gas mileage rating–and for rather less money to boot.

You’ll have to forgo all-wheel drive as well; adding driven rear wheels to your Sorento takes the combined mileage down to 23 mpg with the four-cylinder engine, or an even lower 20 mpg if you opt for the more powerful 3.5-liter V-6.

The base four-cylinder, front-wheel drive Sorento starts at $21,250, versus the all-wheel drive Highlander Hybrid at $38,140.

You can buy a whole lot of gasoline with that extra $16,000-plus, though to be fair, the Toyota is far more lavishly equipped (as many hybrids are ). An all-wheel drive Sorento starts at $25,350, which is still almost $13,000 less.

2012 Ford Explorer

2012 Ford Explorer (2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, front-wheel drive): 20 mpg city, 28 mpg highway – 23 mpg combined

Finally, there’s the all-new Ford Explorer. The old truck-based Explorer sport-utility is now a mid-sized crossover–and a much better vehicle.

Order it with the 2.0-liter direct-injected and turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic, which comes only with front-wheel drive, and you can come fairly close to the Sorento’s combined mileage figure in a vehicle that’s newer, nicer inside, and offers a whole lot more available electronic features.

The 2012 Ford Explorer has sold very well this year (though not as well as the smaller, older Ford Escape compact crossover, which has only five seats), proving that the durability of a truck isn’t really what crossover buyers want.

Instead, they look for lots of space to haul people and goods, a higher and more commanding driving position, and available all-wheel drive. And that’s what Ford provides.
