The Ophthalmology and Surgical Institute of Central Pennsylvania (OSI) is a state-of-the-art surgery center conveniently located in Carlisle, PA.

In addition to ophthalmic surgeries, OSI also provides procedures in the areas of oculoplastics, orthopedics, podiatry and pain management/anesthesia.

Advances in technology have improved procedures, making surgeries easier and less time consuming than in the past. The high-tech environment and sophisticated equipment at OSI provides a highly effective yet convenient and less costly alternative to these procedures.

While the OSI offers the latest technology similar to a hospital, we strive to make your experience as relaxed and comfortable as possible. For most procedures, patients will not even have to change out of their clothes. Usually dentures, prosthetics, and hearing aids may remain in. Family members can stay with the patient during their time in pre-op and recovery.

Your Surgery

Preparing For Surgery

Please follow these instructions when preparing for your surgery:

  • Do not eat or drink anything, including water or gum, after midnight the day before surgery unless your physician directs you otherwise. Your physician will review your medications and determine if any changes are needed for the day of the surgery.
  • On the day of the surgery, notify your physician if you have had any changes to your health since the surgery was scheduled.
  • Wear casual, loose and comfortable clothing.
  • Leave all jewelry and valuables at home.
  • Remove all nail polish, make up and contact lenses before you come to OSI.
  • Bring an identification card and all insurance cards with you.

Your surgeon will provide instructions on preparing for your specific surgery. Please contact your surgeon’s office if you have any questions about your surgery or how to prepare for it.

Following Your Surgery

You will not be allowed to drive or take public transportation (including a bus or taxi) home from your surgery. Please arrange for transportation home. Your driver should remain at OSI during the surgery, as you will be discharged shortly after its completion.

If you have received sedation or general anesthesia, it is recommended that you not stay alone until the next morning due to possible effects of anesthesia.
You will receive additional instructions at the time of your discharge.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), also known as intracranial injury. is commonly caused by vehicle accidents, bad falls and violence. A TBI occurs when there is an external blow to the brain. Brain injuries are often classified by severity – mild, moderate or severe. Diagnosis of all head injuries should be done by a trained medical professional as soon as warning signs or symptoms appear. TBI patients experience complications from memory loss and sleep deprivation to internal hemorrhaging and possibly death. With early treatment for traumatic and severe brain injuries, the future quality of life can be improved.

Brain injuries often have a wide array of both physical and psychological effects. Additionally many TBI symptoms have a delayed onset, which makes diagnosis significantly more difficult. Mild brain injuries, or concussions, may include dizziness, sleep disturbances, headaches, and a loss of consciousness for a few seconds. Moderate to severe traumatic brain injuries include many of the same symptoms of less severe injuries, but usually more dramatic symptoms such as slurred speech, repeated vomiting, loss of bladder control and seizures are present.

Take Exit 20 (NE 124th St.). At the exit stop light turn left onto NE 124th St. At Totem Lake Blvd. turn left. Follow to next light (120th Ave NE) and turn right. You are now on 120th Ave. Follow 120th up the hill (past Trader Joe’s). Go through light at 128th and then turn into the 2nd driveway on the left. We are in the Evergreen Professional Plaza between 128th and 130th lane. We are in Bldg G towards the rear of the parking lot, Suites 100 and 104.

Going North on I-405:

Take exit 20B (NE 124th St/Totem Lake Blvd). Stay in the right lane towards Totem Lake Blvd. and go under the freeway, proceed through the stoplight onto 120th Ave NE. Follow 120th Ave up the hill (past Trader Joe’s). Go through light at 128th and then turn into the 2nd driveway on the left. We are in the Evergreen Professional Plaza between 128th and 130th lane. We are in Bldg G towards the rear of the parking lot, Suites 100 and 104.

Be sure to allow sufficient travel time as this is a high traffic area and there is often construction going on nearby at Evergreen Hospital.

Choosing a nursing home for a loved one, as you know, can be a difficult, stressful and heartbreaking task. Having to do it for my father, and knowing it would be his final place of rest, was depressing, overwhelming and very last minute as we learned his lung cancer was advanced and he needed to be under 24-hour care immediately. Right after choosing The Royal of Cotuit we remained unsure of whether or not we made the right decision even though our initial tour was caring and encouraging and we had no complaints about the facility. But entrusting strangers to be caregivers for our loved one was a scary thing to some degree especially when his needs were 24/7, challenging and intimate at times. Now, after his passing, we can share that we couldn’t be happier or any more pleased than we are with the care the staff at Royal of Cotuit gave my father, and my family, during his time there. Everyone was so very caring, comforting, concerned, empathetic and just had a determination to get my dad in the best state of health and comfort that was possible for him and his situation. Knowing he only had weeks left, we wanted to be sure that he was surrounded by caregivers who provided nothing but the best. Everybody was professional, kind, friendly and just showed signs of wanting to do their job and do it well. We are truly grateful for everything they did for him including how they tried different ways to get him to eat and drink with his dsyphagia. Although attempts to get him to eat or do therapy were refused at times, I know he was content there and each staff member made him smile at some point. It should also be mentioned that the meals provided to the patients are delicious. While visiting and on his last day we were allowed to eat with my Dad and the food tasted so good that my brother had seconds one day. It’s nice to know their food options are great. The staff also consoled and took the time to help my mother, as well as my brother and myself, with any questions or concerns we had including everyone from the office and housekeeping to the nurses and therapists. Their patience, compassion and support did not go unnoticed for her and our family. All the staff members have such an important role in the care of our elderly and some of those jobs, although critical, can be unflattering. I’m sure they do not get the thanks and praise that they are so deserving of for all they do. It is my intent in this review to let others know that my family appreciates all they did for my father. Their rating should be 4-stars. They did such a fantastic job taking care of my father, and always with empathy and a smile, that we never felt the need to call in hospice care. My father had stage 4 lung cancer; most people would call in hospice but we never felt we needed to. The staff alone at RC made my father as comfortable as could be as well as our family. If anyone out there is considering the Royal of Cotuit for their loved one, I can tell you they do a great job. Karen
