Questioning is a powerful alternative to making statements.

A good question is often much better than a defensive remark, or a counter-accusation, for all sorts of situations. Using an open question (What. How. especially) is a simple and effective technique for resisting forceful or bullying pressure. Using questions, rather than statements and guesses, is also very effective for building trust, diffusing conflict, understanding situations, managing other people, teaching, training, and parenting. Traditionally, questioning is regarded as mainly a selling skill, but it’s powerful and productive in virtually every circumstance involving human cooperation.

Anyone can be a leader – inspiring others, helping others, making a positive difference to someone or something. Leadership is most effective and easiest when it is adaptable. Explore different theories of leadership – they each offer adaptable methods, styles, etc.

What’s the most powerful rule of negotiating.

This simple principle is often ignored, particularly because as buyers or sellers we all tend to focus and fixate on a single option, which quickly creates a dependence on it, which produces pressure (including time/deadline) to agree a deal, which weakens our position, and strengthens the position of the other side.

    Interview with a Registered Nurse

    What do you do for a living?

    I am a Registered Nurse.

    How would you describe what you do?

    I take care of patients who are recovering from a wide range of illnesses or from recent surgery.

    What does your work entail?

    I’m responsible for making sure that the patient’s pain is under control, that they receive their prescribed medicine on time, that their vital signs are stable, that the doctor’s orders are being followed and I act as a liaison between the doctor and the patient’s family.

    What is a typical workweek like for you?

    I work three, twelve-hour shifts and I’m stuck on night shift right now. The night shift is really hard. The money is good but the rest of your family is scared to call during the day because they’re scared that I’ll be sleeping. But you kind of get used to it and then eventually you get to work days. So I work 3-twelve hour shifts that usually end up being about 13 or 14 hours because you have to stay late sometimes to finish charting. It ends up almost being a 40 hour work week.

    How did you get started?

    I actually started by going to college and getting a psychology degree and with that degree I was only able to get a job as a receptionist.

    I knew a psychology degree doesn’t really do anything unless you go for your PhD or Masters so I really wanted to help people but I didn’t feel like I was really getting that opportunity and my sister was in nursing school and loved it so I went too.

    I went to a school that offered a one year accelerated Bachelor’s degree in nursing program.

    It was twelve months because I had already had my Bachelor’s degree. I didn’t have to take all the other classes and so I got a second Bachelor’s.

    It was a crazy year. It was probably the most difficult year of my life but it was worth it.

    What do you like about what you do?

    The best part is seeing patients get better and knowing that I played a small role in that. We get a lot of patients who are in a lot of pain after their surgery which can be pretty stressful trying to get their pain under control. But once they’re comfortable and smiling it does feel really good to know that I helped them out.

    What do you dislike?

    I wish I had a lot more time to spend with my patients. There are some busy nights where I’ll run into a room to see something and my patient wants to tell me a joke or a story about her grandkids and it absolutely breaks my heart to have to interrupt them and leave because the patient in the room down the hall is throwing up and another patient is crying in pain and another patient has to go to the bathroom. So there’s sometimes that there is so much going on that I feel like I can’t give my patients the attention that they desire and that I want to.

    How do you make money or how are you compensated?

    Nurses are all hourly so they’re not a salary. It’s not a salary position unless you’re in management.

    How much money do you make as a registered nurse?

    In Kansas City it seems like most hospitals for new graduate nurses start around $21 or $22 an hour and then every year the salary goes up by a little bit less than a $1 a year. I’ve been a nurse for 5 years and I’m making $26 an hour.

    Hospital nurses tend to make more than other types of nurses. At doctor’s offices they only make like $18 or $19 an hour even if you are a registered nurse. So you definitely get more in the hospital and then hospitals usually pay night shift workers a shift differential which for me is $3 an hour so I get my base pay and then for the night hours I get $3 more an hour and I also get additional pay. If it’s a weekend you get $2 an hour extra.

    How much did you make starting out in this career?

    I started out at $22 an hour maybe but that was in TX.

    What education or skills that are needed to be a Registered Nurse?

    Most hospitals require a registered nurse degree but you can do that two ways. There’s actually a Bachelor’s degree which is called a BSN and some hospitals prefer that and pay more; other hospitals don’t distinguish between a diploma nurse, which is an RN without the Bachelor’s, and the Bachelor’s.

    What is the most challenging about what you do?

    The patient load and the severity of their sickness.

    If I have five patients and I have one patient who demands a lot of time because they’re in a lot of pain or they’re really sick then my other four patients might not get the attention that they deserve. So I’ve learned time management skills are just absolutely critical and even then sometimes I’ll have my whole night figured out and something will come up and throw everything off. So it’s definitely a skill learning to prioritize and juggle my plans for the night I guess. That takes a long time to learn.

    What is the most rewarding for you?

    The patients, just getting to know the patients and their families and seeing them get better.

    What advice would you offer someone that’s considering this career?

    The best advice I could offer would be to contact a hospital in the area and see if there’s any way that you can shadow a nurse for a full shift because I think that a lot of people watch TV shows and see doctors doing all the work and they think that’s the way things actually are and it’s not like that. Nursing is a very, very physical job. It’s a lot of thinking and it’s a lot of work. I love it but I’ve met a lot of people who I think if they would have actually seen what it was really like before they went to school that they might have chosen something different.

    I don’t want to sound discouraging by any means but I think it’s a good idea to actually shadow someone to see what it will be like.

    How much time off do you get or take?

    Well we technically have a 12 hour shift. It’s only three days a week so every week you get four days off and then it seems like hospitals give you a lot of paid time off because you don’t get holidays paid. With most jobs you get paid when you don’t have to work on a holiday but hospitals they’re open every day all day so you sometimes have to work holidays so we do rack up a lot of paid time off and so it just seems like occasionally I’ll be able to take a day or two off which is really nice.

    What is a common misconception that people have about what you do?

    That nurses just give medicine and they don’t do much else.

    What are your goals or dreams for the future?

    I guess to eventually to try different areas of nursing and just see what is all out there because that’s one of the best things about nursing, there are so many different areas that if you get bored with something or something isn’t the right fit you can try a different specialty, or you can go from being a floor nurse to an operating room nurse and it’s almost like a different profession. So you have a lot of options I guess. In the future I would like to try out different things and see what the best fit is for me.

    What else would you like people to know about what you do?

    That’s a good question. To be nice to their nurses! No, I’m kidding. It’s a very rewarding job, you learn a lot, it’s constantly evolving, that people should only go into nursing if it’s their true passion.

    And that if you really do want to help people and you are interest in medicine that it is a very rewarding and exciting career.

    Students may obtain both the M.B.A. degree and the M.S. degree in Social and Applied Economics under the dual-degree program, which permits common course work to apply to both programs as long as the courses are completed within the time limit set for completion of graduate degree programs. This policy does not apply to students who received a M.B.A. degree or M.S. degree in economics from schools other than Wright State.     Dual Degree with Nursing
    Students may obtain both the M.B.A. degree and the M.S. degree in administration of nursing and health care systems under the dual-degree program, which permits common course work to apply to both programs. Students who receive a M.B.A. degree or M.S. degree in nursing from schools other than Wright State cannot enter this dual degree program. For further information, contact the director of graduate programs in business and logistics management and director of M.S. in nursing program.

    MBA CORE and Concentrations
    After completing (or being waived from) the prerequisite foundation courses, students begin the MBA program with the MBA Core, 21 credit hours of course work that are common to all MBA students. Students should enroll in MBA 7500 – Leadership and Ethics, as the first core course. Students cannot enroll in the capstone course, MBA 7500, until they have completed all core MBA courses and obtain permission from Director of the MBA program. Students also complete a nine credit-hour concentration chosen from the list shown below.

    Students have the flexibility to choose and structure concentration(s) to meet their career objectives. Foundation courses cannot be used as electives within the concentration area(s). Students taking graduate business courses are expected to follow course prerequisite requirements.

    Despite many people looking forward to “happily ever after”, this doesn’t always happen. Many relationships and families aren’t perfect, by any stretch of the imagination, and some have so many problems that they seem irreparable. However, contrary to what some may believe, happy marriages and peaceful families are possible. They just take a little – or, in some cases, a lot – of work.

    Marriage and family counseling can help many couples and families work out their differences and difficulties. Professionals will often see the same types of problems in most of the couples and families that they work with. Some of the most common problems in many households, for example, often stem from inefficient communication or even a complete lack of communication. Many married couples also find themselves arguing over such things as finances, bad habits, schedules, intimacy, and child rearing.

    In today’s hectic world, it is not uncommon for couples and families to split up over even the most minor issues. In fact, some studies have shown that the divorce rate in this country is as high as it has ever been. Because of this, there is an ever growing need for marriage and family counselors.

    As mentioned above, the divorce rate in the United States is astounding. Nearly 50% of marriages today end in divorce.     Marriage counseling, however, can be used to help save some marriages and patch rifts between family members. This can help lower divorce rates, making children feel more secure, loved, stable, and comfortable in their homes.

    What Do Marriage and Family Counselors Do?

    Marriage and family counselors work with all different types of married couples and families in an attempt to repair volatile relationships between involved parties. Some of these counselors may specialize in working only with married couples or certain types of families, while others may work with nearly any family that is having troubles.

    During these meetings, a marriage and family counselor will typically act as an unbiased third party. He will let each individual in a marriage or family state his or her “side”, or point of view. While one person is speaking, the others involved in the counseling are encouraged to let them state their concerns. If they have anything to interject, they are to wait until it is “their turn” to do so. Also, when speaking, individuals must be courteous and respectful of other family members. For instance, family members should refrain from name calling, yelling, and blaming. They should also be ready and willing to admit their own faults as well.

    The goal of marriage and family counseling is not necessarily to cease all arguments, but to open the lines of communication between married couples and other family members. In many cases, this does not usually mean that families will not argue at all. Instead, they will learn to discuss issues, or even argue more effectively.

    Marriage and family counselors will often help couples and families tackle a number of issues. however, in most cases, abuse is not usually one of these issues. In fact, counselors in many areas are considered to be mandated reporters of abuse. This means that they are required by law to report suspected cases of abuse, particularly child abuse, to local law enforcement officials.

    Where Do Marriage and Family Counselors Work?

    Marriage and family counselors may work in a a few different settings. For instance, they may be part of a social service office or a community health center.

    The majority of marriage and family counselors, however, usually go into business for themselves, opening their own private practices. In these situations, couples and families seek out the services of the counselors and meet in the counselors’ private offices.

    What Are the Education Requirements to Become a Marriage and Family Counselor?

    Many individuals pursuing a marriage and family counseling careers will often start by earning a bachelor’s degree in counseling or psychology. While enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program, students interested in a marriage and family counseling career should take courses to help them understand life stages, child development, marriage and relationships, and family dynamics.

    In order to become a licensed marriage and family counselor, you will also usually need to earn a minimum of a master’s degree in marriage and family counseling as well. Some marriage and family counselors will also earn doctoral degrees in this area. The majority of states also require marriage and family counselors to have at least 3,000 hours of supervised work experience before they can take their licensing examinations. This may vary from state to state, however, so you should contact your state’s licensure board for exact details.

    What Is the Average Salary of a Marriage and Family Counselor?

    According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. as of May of 2014, marriage and family therapists earned an annual average salary of $51,730. However salary will range depending on education and employer and experience. For example, the top 10 percent of marriage and family counselors make an average salary of $78,920 while the bottom 10 percent make just $30,510. New Jersey pays its marriage and family counselors the most of any state in the country while states like Florida and Virginia pay the counselors much less.

    Look to the Insurance Industry for Job Stability

    People may not think of insurance as the most glamorous industry in America, but it does offer stability, challenge and growth to those who choose the profession.

    Many students feel the only opportunity in an insurance company is working as an agent, says Teresa Poppe, talent management manager at State Farm Insurance in Bloomington, Illinois. There are so many more opportunities within an insurance company, such as claims, marketing, human resources, underwriting, etc. We need to continue educating students and market all of the opportunities insurance companies have to offer.

    For instance, insurance is fairly recession-proof, because insurance companies tend to be fiscally conservative and Americans need insurance whether the economy is up or down. And since insurance firms are often mutual companies (meaning they answer to policy holders rather than Wall Street), they can launch sophisticated and aggressive information technology strategies, routinely support safety education and tend to have close ties to their local communities, says Eric Schulting, enterprise recruiting and retention manager for State Farm.

    The industry is not without challenges. If gas prices rise too high, consumers may decide to own (and insure) fewer cars, and fewer home sales mean fewer homeowners policies sold. When unemployment rises, so do theft and arson, and, therefore, hazard insurance claims.

    Industry job growth is also limited by corporate downsizing, improved productivity due to new underwriting technology and a trend toward marketing by mail, telephone and Internet.

    At the same time, the industry is expanding into the sales of other financial-services products, such as securities, retirement plans and mutual funds. That trend is balanced by competition from banks that have entered the insurance market.

    Retirements Driving Strong Hiring Climate

    With so many of their employees rapidly reaching retirement age, insurance companies are on the lookout for all types of employees. The biggest trend influencing hiring and employment in the insurance industry is the generational shift the talent market is going to experience, says Sharon Rues Pettid, manager of human resources for a large national insurance company.

    Some insurance firms look beyond recent college graduates and also recruit mid-career professionals from the health, financial-services and call-center industries. We hire doctors and nurses for underwriting, says Clarissa Gilliam, corporate vice president of talent acquisition for another insurance organization. We open our search to investment houses for our accounting positions and look for sales and marketing people who want to move over and learn insurance.

    At State Farm, call-center jobs are plentiful since the company does not offshore its customer-service representative (CSR) positions. However, competition for those jobs can be keen, because the pay is decent, the benefits are generous and job security is good, Schulting says. And multilingual CSRs are particularly in demand.

    Actuaries and underwriters continue to be very much in demand, according to Pettid. This unique skill set is challenging to find and provides a unique and defined career path, she says. Also niche product line expertise, such as group disability insurance, tends to be very hot and lucrative for candidates.

    Surveying the Segments

    The medical service and health insurance segments are the fastest-growing parts of the insurance industry, thanks to aging Baby Boomers buying health and long-term- care insurance, as well as annuities and other pension products.

    Growth may be slower in the auto insurance segment, where competition has resulted in rate declines in virtually every state, says a spokesperson for the Insurance Information Institute .

    While some areas of insurance are projected to grow more than others, companies in all lines will continue to need support personnel in the years ahead, Gilliam says. We don t get to be successful at life insurance without having good accounting, corporate, compliance, public relations, underwriting, risk and tax people, she says. Life insurance is our brand and our product, but we re a major, stable, successful, diverse employee-friendly company.

    Questioning is a powerful alternative to making statements.

    A good question is often much better than a defensive remark, or a counter-accusation, for all sorts of situations. Using an open question (What. How. especially) is a simple and effective technique for resisting forceful or bullying pressure. Using questions, rather than statements and guesses, is also very effective for building trust, diffusing conflict, understanding situations, managing other people, teaching, training, and parenting. Traditionally, questioning is regarded as mainly a selling skill, but it’s powerful and productive in virtually every circumstance involving human cooperation.

    Anyone can be a leader – inspiring others, helping others, making a positive difference to someone or something. Leadership is most effective and easiest when it is adaptable. Explore different theories of leadership – they each offer adaptable methods, styles, etc.
